In March, Malaga becomes the ideal destination for lovers of the seventh art. Malaga Spanish Film Festival, an inescapable event for film and culture lovers, onlookers and hardcore fans. Or simply for those looking to enjoy a movie getaway or a break in a wonderful city.

To warm up, the show is preceded by the MaF (Malaga de Festival) a busy schedule in which there are exhibitions, concerts and even cinematographic routes. Such interesting programming starts three weeks before the beginning of the festival, which this year is celebrated from the 17th to the 26th of March. So are you coming with us to the red carpet?

MaF 2017: the prelude of the Malaga Film Festival

Until the day before the inaugural gala, the capital of the Costa del Sol hosts more than 150 activities that revolve around the world of celluloid. It is the prelude to the great encounter of Spanish cinema, which under the name MaF, comes loaded with live music performances, exclusive sessions, retrospectives and tributes.

The projections in the Bishop's Palace and the old tobacco factory, or the exhibitions of the Municipal Heritage Museum and the Casa Amarilla are just some of the most striking proposals. In addition, there are also conferences, workshops, meetings with film directors, recitals and plays in different parts of the city.

From the big screen to reality

As every year, the inaugural gala at the Cervantes Theatre kicks off the Film Festival. Before the expectant eyes of their followers, actors and directors of the national panorama cross the red carpet flooding the theatre with glamour. A week full of emotions and surprises is ahead.

From the Picasso Museum to the Albeniz cinema, through the Echegaray Theatre, magic takes over Malaga in the form of films, short films and documentaries. Do not forget to reserve your seat for the most anticipated premiere or your favourite cycle. Afterwards, we recommend you enjoy a dinner on a terrace or have a drink in the historic centre to regain strength and continue enjoying the atmosphere that is breathed in the city during the days of the festival.

Another option is to enjoy the gastronomic experiences designed by the festival for some restaurants, which combine cinema and cuisine with culinary proposals seasoned with a lot of art. If you prefer night time entertainment while the body holds up, nothing better than thematic parties organised by pubs and hotels.

What you should know about the Malaga Festival

Inspired by the emblematic flower of the city, the Biznaga de Oro is the highest award for the films of the official section of the Malaga Spanish Film Festival, which this year marks its twentieth edition. The statuette recreates a bouquet of jasmines, a floral element typical of the capital of the Costa del Sol (you can find more about the history of the Malaga biznaga in the post we dedicated).

In this film show, veterans of the film industry share scenes with new directors and actors. Musicians, writers, the plastic arts and prestigious cooks, among many celebrities who also attend this event.
