Marbella, capital city of luxury in Costa del Sol. From this beautiful town, through the well known Milla de Oro (Golden Mile), we can approach one of the most special and sophisticated points in Europe and one of the most opulent of the Mediterranean Sea: Puerto Banús.
About its history
What most of the prestigious visitors of Puerto Banús don’t know is that the place was once a small fishermen’s village. It wasn’t until 1963 that José Banús, a real-estate developer who had succeeded in the Pilar neighbourhood in Madrid, started the building of what he called ‘New Andalucía”. The urbanisation was destined to be a complex not only for a rich minority (Marbella was already visited by exclusive personalities and noble families), but for a majority of people of means.
Nevertheless, the vision of this man, who would become the most important developer of touristic complexes in Costa del Sol, went further. In 1970, José Banús and Noldi Schreck (who had participated in the design and construction of Beverly Hills), had the idea of projecting one of the most exclusive ports in Europe, as a culmination of their work, built on a scale never thought before. In fact, it’s still one of the largest of the Mediterranean.
From the beginning, Puerto Banús had an spectacular welcoming: only to the opening party, 1.700 invited guests attended, among whom were the film director Roman Polanski, the PlayBoy owner Hugh Heffner, the Doctor Christian Barnard, heart transplantation pioneer, and Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco.
At present
Puerto Banús is now the place with the largest concentration of yatchs, sports cars and exclusive brands boutiques, besides having the most prestigious hotels and restaurants. It’s perfect for going shopping or poke around celebrities and glamour, as here you can find the coolest boutiques in the world.
