There are a lots of advantages of scuba diving in winter in Costa del Sol. Take note:
Advantages of scuba diving in winter
In winter there’s less seaweed, so you'll be able to contemplate the beauty of the seafloor in all its glory. For that reason alone it's worth scuba diving in autumn or winter. Another advantage is that you'll be more comfortable in your wetsuit, thanks to the average annual Costa del Sol temperature of 19 degrees.
Recommended areas for scuba diving on the Costa del Sol
The first thing you need is a wetsuit. Two-piece wetsuits are the most recommended option, with a thickness of at least 7 mm, so that you don't get cold in the water. You'll also have to wear neoprene boots or wet socks, flippers and a snorkel. And of course you'll need a place to go scuba diving. One of the most recommended areas is the Maro-Cerro Gordo Nature Park, in Nerja. La Cala de Mijas and Estepona are also highly recommended, depending on the type of marine fauna and flora that you wish to see.
First-time scuba diving in Nerja
There's a first time for everything. So if you're prepared to go scuba diving, the best spot are the cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo in Nerja. Diving schools can be found there and at other spots on the Costa del Sol, which will help you to enjoy the experience from the very beginning. These centres offer year-round training sessions in places such as Burriana beach, also in Nerja. Its waters, between 1 and 30 metres deep, are perfect for scuba diving.
More than just scuba diving
When you decide to take off your diving mask you can make the most of the opportunity to go shopping in Nerja or visit one of its bars and restaurants. You can also enjoy the sand on Burriana beach and visit the Nerja caves or the "Balcony of Europe". Furthermore, the annual seafloor clean-up takes place in November. You can take part by diving but also from land. Once the clean-up has been finished, the event turns into a great feast by the sea.
