Wine tourism in Malaga: discover the wines of the Axarquía

 Tags: Culture

The province of Malaga is an unmissable destination for lovers of wine culture. From the Serranía de Ronda to the Axarquía, passing through the Montes de Málaga, the Comarca Norte (Northern Region) and the Eastern Costa del Sol, you’ll find wineries where excellent wines are produced.

Most of them organize tastings and guided tours where you can learn about the unique features of Malaga wines and how they are made. Many wineries have maintained traditional production processes, with manual harvesting. One of the most unusual areas is the Axarquía region, where wines are produced under the Málaga and Sierras de Málaga denomination.

The vineyards of the Axarquía are characterized by their rugged terrain and steep slopes. Here, the Moscatel and Romé grape varieties are cultivated, both of which are native to the zone. One of the region’s unique features is its grape harvest which is one of the earliest in Europe. Most of the wines made from the grapes harvested are white and sweet, although red wines are also made.

Wineries you can visit in the Axarquía

Bodegas Jorge Ordóñez is one of the wineries that can be visited in this area. Here they organize visits to the vineyards and tastings of their wines. La Bodega Dimobe in Moclinejo, is another of the best known. It is divided into three rooms where you can see how the Axarquía’s winemaking process has evolved from 1927 to the present.

Sedella Vinos is a small winery that produces artisan and natural wines. It is set in a spectacular landscape, offering personalized and exclusive wine tourism activities during which you can enjoy the landscape of the Axarquía.

Bodegas Bentomiz offers visits that include the winery and tastings. Those looking for a more complete experience can opt for a full lunch at the winery’s restaurant with five dishes specially designed to combine with the winery’s wines. Visitors can enjoy an excursion to the vineyard and wine cellar, a guided tasting or an excellent meal carefully designed to combine with the winery’s excellent wines.

Cómpeta is other Axarquía town with a great wine tradition. Here, you’ll find the Bodegas Almijara, which offers guided tours where you can learn about the past and present of its winemaking process, together with wine tastings. On 15 August, the municipality celebrates the Night of Wine, declared a Unique Provincial Tourism Festival.
