Visiting the Costa del Sol in spring

 Tags: Golf

From the evergreen Spanish fir groves to the bright blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the landscapes of Málaga are painted in a spectrum of infinite tones and hues. Be a witness to this show of nature at Grazalema Nature Park or Sierra de las Nieves, two Biosphere Reserves.

You’ll come across cosy villages like Istán or Monda, paying tribute to regional cuisine in April. You can spend the night in the area, in the old hunting lodge of the Larios dynasty (now converted to a hotel) or in a farmhouse surrounded by vegetable gardens for a full experience in agritourism.

Adventure in Málaga

In spring, Málaga is a great place for an adrenaline-boosting break. Go canyoning in the gorge of Las Buitreras or explore the chasms, lakes and sumps in the cave of El Gato. There are as many as 28 protected natural areas waiting for the adventurer in you.

Go up on a hot-air balloon for a bird’s-eye view of El Torcal in Antequera – an enchanted forest in stone. Go kayaking in the river Chíllar between rocky walls or canoeing in the river Guadiaro. Brace yourself for a climb up the Sima del Diablo canyon or Los Gaitanes gorge. To take a rest, try the resort housed in the old flour milling plant in El Chorro.

Spring festivals

Several villages in Málaga Province hold festivals honouring typical foods in spring. They make a golden opportunity to peek into Málaga’s customs and traditions. Verdial olive oil in Periana, oranges in Coín, loquats in Sayalonga… Together, they draw a map of the flavours of Málaga’s countryside.

If you prefer to have fun by the sea, come to Estepona in May, for the festival of St Isidore the Famer or to Fuengirola Feria Internacional de los Pueblos (International Show of Nations): a fair around the world’s folk culture, art and food without leaving the Costa del Sol.

Spring is also the season of religious feeling and striking scenes associated with Easter time in Málaga. Ceremonies and processions follow one another without end. Other events worth attending are the Tres Cruces Verdiales Festival in Almogía and Archidona’s Dog Show. As you can see, spring is an ideal time of the year to come to Málaga.
