The Costa del Sol is a unique destination to share with the family. Apart from the huge offer of leisure parks and attractions, here you can live feasts and traditions, especially magical for the smallest members. One of them is Christmas, and the most exciting moment for children: the night of the Three Kings. Below we tell you how to live this event in the city of Malaga.
The parade of illusion
In Spain the tradition of the Three Kings is of great importance. Although Father Christmas also gives gifts to the children, they wait with more impatience the arrival of Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar, who usually come loaded with toys. This celebration corresponds with the Epiphany, the religious commemoration of the arrival of the Three Wise Men for the birth of Baby Jesus.
In all the municipalities of the Costa del Sol you can witness fantastic parades on the evening of the 5th of January. From the ornate floats, many sweets are thrown, especially from the most important floats of the parade: those of the Three Kings.
All these parades are showy and endearing, but if we had to highlight one because of its greatness and singularity, it could well be that of the city of Malaga. More than 22,046 pounds of sweets, fifteen floats and about 1,500 participants make up this spectacular procession of illusion. And a very unique fact of this parade of Malaga is its beginning: the Three Wise Men arrive by boat from the East to the Port of Malaga to the cheers of thousands of children. An unforgettable plan if you are coming with family!
Traditions: gifts and the Roscon de Reyes
During that night, children leave their shoes so that the Three Kings can put the gifts next to them. However, nervousness makes it difficult to sleep that night...
It is also traditional on the Costa del Sol to eat the delicious sweet of this celebration: the Roscon de Reyes. This is a Spanish version of the Twelfth Night Cake, which consists of a bun in the shape of a ring sprinkled with dried fruits, chopped almonds and usually filled with cream... besides some surprise. You may find a nice little figurine - or get the bean! If that happens, that person has to pay for the roscon.
