Inland Malaga is enjoyed to the full when hiking. Arriving effortlessly in a white village by car is not the same as getting there after walking for kilometres and savouring it as the end of the route. The Great Malaga Path makes it easy to travel around the province in boots with a rucksack on your back. It is a circular route with various stages, which can be consulted on its website and printed guides. Once the decision has been made to embark on the adventure, the most difficult thing is to choose. We recommend four of the most interesting routes, thanks to their views or environmental wealth.
Two of the most beautiful towns on the Costa del Sol are brought together on this route. On one hand, a coastal municipality with virgin beaches, such as Nerja; on the other hand, Frigiliana, considered to be one of the most beautiful and charming villages in the country. The beginning of the route requires an average level, but is well worth it. The views along the route are spectacular and the fun awaits us on crossing the course of the River Chillar, which forcefully descends a ravine that is well known by hikers in Malaga.
Stage 23 El Burgo – Ronda
In this stage, the horizon becomes even more attractive: we are talking about Ronda, one of the great cities in the province of Malaga, which bewitches everyone who visits it. The Monument to Juan José Gallardo Mingolla (known as Pasos Largos) in El Burgo is the starting point. Of high difficulty, the flora and fauna found here offer a unique landscape. The Sierra de las Nieves is the source of rivers, such as Turón, forming pools of turquoise waters.
Stage 31 Marbella – Ojén
Going into the silence and quietness of the Sierra Blanca mountains, alongside Marbella, is a priceless experience. This easier stage enters an area of important environmental richness. The Mediterranean vegetation of juniper, gorse and sage, among other species, will accompany you on your walk.
Stage 20 Guadalhorce Dams – El Chorro Station
If we talk about hiking, we must mention the Gaitanes Gorge. This spot, located between the municipalities of Álora and Ardales, is a partially mountainous area excavated by the passing of the River Guadalhorce. Erosion has given way to stunning views, with rocky walls in which the verticality is impressive. The path begins from the north and finishes at El Chorro railway station. On arrival, we will have circled the Gaitanes Gorge and the recently restored Caminito del Rey (King’s Little Pathway), which will be opened at Easter.
Before starting, a word of advice: consult the “develop your emotions” section on the Great Malaga Path website. Hiking is ideal to find yourself surrounded by Nature and to work your mind as well as your body. Are you ready?
