Natural is in vogue. Despite the practically infinite variety of products on offer, and the fact that the market is awash with new things on a daily basis suited to all diets, tastes and needs, in recent years there has been a shift towards organic and natural produce, and a shift towards locally sourced produce.
The Costa del Sol - a land of great variety, quality farming and livestock, with an ancestral tradition - couldn’t ignore this trend. Hence there are several different Malaga farmers offering organic products: fruits and vegetables, wines, meats and cold cuts, dairy products, beers, breads and cereals, coffee, cosmetic and even cleaning products.
We suggest that you go to trusted shops and producers, and the best way to do this is to go to organic markets that can be found all over the Costa del Sol.
One of the most famous markets is the Guadalhorce Organic Market, and it's hardly surprising that this region is known as the huerta of Malaga given its fertility and the fruits (especially citrus fruits) and vegetables it grows. This network of markets, where we find all sorts of organic products, boasts eight locations in several other towns:
• The Organic Market in Marbella: first Saturday of the month
• Cártama Market: first Sunday of the month
• Benalmádena Market: third Sunday of the month
• Malaga Market (in the district of Huelin): fourth Saturday of the month
• Cala de Mijas Market: last Sunday of every month
These markets can also be found in the region of Axarquía, which is known for growing tropical products, and is also famous for its wines and oils. In these markets we come across many of the products grown in the area, such as mangos, avocados and custard apples.
There is also a market for local and organic produce in Antequera on the first Saturday of every month, which brings together over 125 farmers from the area. Plus it's the perfect opportunity to do some sightseeing.
