Street markets are the best place for inexpensive retail therapy on the Costa del Sol, wrapped in an atmosphere from chic to bohemian. The perfect alternative formula to go shopping without compromising quality. Clothing, art and crafts are all up for sale in these quaint open-air markets. Shopping and strolling at a time.
Go meandering about the food, flower, clothes or antique stalls as you listen to the vendors crying out their offers. It is an amazing experience, you’ll see.
Everything looks different in a street market. The boisterous shoppers, a huge variety of products and the cosy stalls make it an unconventional shopping experience. What is more, most markets are blessed with Málaga’s mild weather all year round.
Glamorous markets
Although you need no excuses to come to Puerto Banús, the Saturday market could make a perfect one. Attracting celebrities as well, the baratillo (flea market) in Marbella sells everything from antiques and décor to fashion in many different styles.
Twice a year, in spring and Christmas, Marbella plays host to a traditional market, La Virginia. If you are in town when it is held, you will not want to miss it: homemade food, live music and anything you can imagine for sale.
Charming markets
The souk at Muelle Uno is perfect if you are looking for a culinary experience with a supplement in the Puerto de Málaga. On the second Sunday of the month, you can buy clothes, accessories and a very long list of original items while staring at the Mediterranean.
On the first Sunday of the month, the street market in Baños del Carmen offers clothes from emerging designers and organic foods (including delicious bread). After going through the market, take a drink at the spa bar, a unique place in Málaga, affording some of the most stunning sunset views of the city.
Original markets
Two of the most comprehensive street markets are held in Fuengirola on Tuesday and Saturday. But if you are looking for something really special, take a look at the flea market on Sundays. What you cannot find here you will probably not find anywhere else: vinyl records, vintage musical instruments, collector’s items… you name it.
From Wednesday to Saturday, there are street markets in Benalmádena, Torremolinos and La Cala de Mijas; they all have most convenient prices. The flea market around the Costa del Sol Racecourse on Sunday sells second-hand clothes and other goods.
The bustling market held on Tuesday in Nerja is an institution in itself. Both locals and out-of-towners come to find the best deals. The image is a common sight across Málaga Province, whose street markets are a tourist attraction in their own right.
