Six tips for ecological sailing

 Tags: Nautical

We appreciate how much you enjoy sailing and what it means for you to be in contact with nature. Making sure that we can continue to enjoy this privileged maritime ecosystem is the responsibility of all of us.

Here are a few tips to make sure your trips on the Mediterranean are as sustainable as possible:

  1. Make sure that the drive system does not have a leak of any kind, whether of oil or fuel. Also be very careful when refuelling at sea, and always put a rag around the fuel intake.
  1. Use ecological products wherever possible. This is especially important for all the products that will end up in the sea water, such as cleaning products, shampoos, etc.
  1. When lowering and raising the anchor, make sure you do not damage the sea bed, and do not get close to sea animals when the engine is running. The noise alone can damage the sea life.
  1. Don't throw waste overboard. Even when you are throwing organic material that you think can feed the marine life, this is not usually the case and what you throw overboard will contribute to the contamination of the sea.
  1. Use the containers for waste for used batteries and oil. There are ports that offer a collection service for this type of material, which ensures that they are handled properly for possible recycling.
  1. Do not play loud music or make loud noises. Noise pollution is a very serious problem that can affect the behaviour of many species. Remember that there are sea creatures whose sense of hearing is very well-developed.
