The Costa del Sol has an incredible range of landscapes: the beach and the mountains are remarkably close to each other. These abrupt changes in relief make it possible to cool off in either of these locations.
Here is a list of the most remarkable natural settings in the interior of the province of Malaga where you can enjoy water sports and activities in summer.
Reservoir of La Concepción, Istán
Also known as the Pantano de Río Verde, it supplies water to the whole Costa del Sol. It lies in the Sierra de las Nieves, and has excellent facilities for canoes and kayaks. If you are into adventure sports, you can follow the course of the river along a fantastic trail 8 kilometres long, with plenty of refreshing rapids along the way.
Barranco Blanco, Coín
The course of the river Alaminos has created a beautiful landscape that you can admire as you travel along it. There is a trail along the course of the river itself, but be warned that the water can be very deep and very cold indeed!
It is one of the shortest rivers in the province. El charco de la Paloma is the most popular point, a well of pure clear water beneath a protective wall of limestone. Swimming across it is a real pleasure.
Angosturas del Guadalmina, Benahavís
Benahavís is one of those lovely white washed villages founded by the moors, and there is a route that follows the course of the river Guadalmina as it passes nearby. However, this is one of the more challenging and complicated trails, and is suited only for those who are well-prepared, as it involves swimming, traversing a narrow gorge and rappelling up a sheer rock face...
Reservoir Conde de Guadalhorce
Also known as Pantano del Chorro, it’s a great place to relax and practice water sports. There are also other attractions, such as the Casa del Ingeniero, an unusual house that overlooks the lake.
The famous Caminito del Rey is nearby, a breathtaking walkway that runs along the walls of the gorge of Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, offering spectacular views along the way.
Reservoir of La Viñuela
The reservoir of La Viñuela is the largest in the province and is located in La Axarquía. Its waters supply the fields of the south and the city of Malaga when necessary. It is a popular location for rambling and there are routes indicated for mountain bikes.
