Wine lovers will find their perfect destination in the province of Malaga. Its three Designations of Origin - Malaga, Sierra de Malaga and Pasas de Malaga - are the perfect enticement onto a route that takes us on a tour of much of the province, where wines with years of tradition are made with Moscatel and Pedro Ximénez grapes. To put it simply, the Malaga Designation of Origin, created in 1932, encompasses naturally sweet wines across 45 wineries. The Sierras de Malaga Designation of Origin, created in 2001, encompasses white, red and rosé wines. Lastly, the Pasas de Malaga Designation of Origin takes in raisins of the Moscatel de Alejandría variety.
One way of learning about wine culture in Malaga is to start off by visiting the Wine Museum, which is located in the city's central palace of Biedmas - a building dating back to the 18th century that was refurbished to house this centre. This is where you can find out everything about the wines grown in the Montes de Malaga mountain range, the Region of Axarquía, the Region of Antequera, the west coast and the Serranía de Ronda mountains.
Another great option is to immerse yourself in the lands where these wines are grown and produced, where you can become acquainted with villages, areas and traditions that won't fail to impress.
Wines from Axarquía
In Axarquía, towns such as Algarrobo, Sayalonga, Cómpeta, Canillas de Albaida, Torrox, Nerja and Frigiliana offer us a perfect combination of high-quality coastal and inland tourism. In Torrox we come across Roman remains, churches, museums and monasteries. In Nerja we can see the town's Caves and the famous Balcony of Europe. Frigiliana is home to one of the most stunning views of the coast, and one of the most important Mudejar quarters in Europe. Not far away, Cómpeta is worthy of a mention, which holds its Wine Night on 15 August. It's also a town where visitors can learn about the process involved in traditional wine production. In this region we can visit the Dimobe Wineries in Moclinejo.
Wines in Antequera
The region of Antequera is home to the Malaga Virgen Wineries, located in Fuente de Piedra, which are a great reason to tour the area. A paradise for cultural and culinary tourism where you simply have to visit the Dolmen Site.
Wines in the Serranía de Ronda
The most important place in Malaga for wine tourism is the region of Serranía de Ronda, which is home to several traditional and renowned wineries such as Bodegas Morosanto and Bodegas Excelencias
