Málaga from up high

 Tags: Leisure

Málaga and the Costa del Sol are home to places of outstanding beauty where you can enjoy picture-postcard panoramic views. Its historically significant towns and cities such as Antequera, Ronda or Málaga itself treat thousands of travellers to sights that, once seen, are never forgotten.

Málaga Cathedral

Málaga Cathedral, “La Manquita” as its popularly known, opened up to the public not so long ago – and it's a visual marvel that is at last accessible to anyone. 50m high and with 200 steps going up to it, you can now visit the domed roof over Málaga Cathedral (built between the 16th and 18th century), which offers a different perspective on Plaza del Obispo, the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle as well as the rest of Málaga's historical centre. In reality, it's about being in the heart of the city centre... but from above.

Santa María La Mayor Royal Collegiate Church (Antequera)

The Santa María Royal Collegiate Church (Antequera) is the first Renaissance church to have been built in Andalusia (between 1530 and 1550). Its evidently grandiose and beautiful façade was built entirely in ashlar stone and adds greatly to church's essence. From it and from any of its heights, you can enjoy Antequera at your feet as you have truly magnificent views that go beyond the building itself. It's interesting to note that, despite being a church, it does not serve a religious purpose. In fact, it hosts concerts and exhibitions.

Gibralfaro Castle (Málaga)

Below is Málaga. There is nothing above Gibralfaro Castle. Below this enormous and imposing castle surrounded by battlements is the city of Málaga, the lapping waves of the sea, the La Malagueta Bullring and the new Muelle Uno(Dock One). Below the castle – so near and yet so far – lies Málaga. So if the value of this castle from the Phoenician period as a monument is great, then its value as a visual attraction is probably even greater. It is, without a doubt, one of the must-have photographs of Málaga and the province.

Vélez-Málaga Fortress

At 80m above sea level (the highest point of Vélez-Málaga), the fortress gives us a sensation of having dominion over the region. This was the objective of the Nasrid king when he transformed it (between the 15th and 16 century) into one of the most important castles of the time. Now, the Vélez-Málaga Fortress enjoys not only the privilege of having survived through the ages and its status as a major monument, it also enjoys fine views. Similarly to the views over Málaga and Antequera, part of the city of Vélez-Málaga lies at the fortress's feet and the scenery is unique.

Sohail Castle (Fuengirola)

The castle's attractive exterior gives us the impression we're standing in front of a monument, at least because of the view. Its palatial exteriors and its very presence – the result of various refurbishments – have turned Sohail Castle into a visual phenomenon that goes beyond its strength as a monument. It now has a veritable regal presence in Fuengirola, and from it you can see the beach, the inland and the rest of the city. On top of this, Sohail Castle is one of the best auditoriums in the province seeing as it plays host to renowned artists and festivals such as the Fuengirola City Festival.

Spectacular views you can only enjoy on the Costa del Sol – so what are you waiting for?
