How to get around Málaga: from the donkey taxi to the bicycle

Can you imagine visiting a city on a donkey? In Mijas it's possible thanks to the well-known donkey taxi, but it's not the only "alternative" mode of transport on the Costa del Sol. If you want your visit to be really unique, take note of these interesting modes of transport:

The donkey taxi in Mijas

Today, the donkey taxi is one of the most distinctive features of the coastal town of Mijas, as well as one of its main tourist attractions. You will be able to go sightseeing in the town centre using this unique mode of transport on the back of the actual animal.

The origin of this particular form of transport in the Mijas town dates back to the 1960s, when the town's workers used to return home by donkey and tourists would ask to take photos with them, see them up close and ride them.

Horse-drawn carriages

The horse-drawn carriages that can be found in the areas surrounding Málaga Cathedral, commonly known as ‘La Manquita’, are typical and we could even say exclusive to the city centre.

While it is not a mode of transport that we can use to go anywhere we please, it is an alternative to enjoy the most important monuments in the city centre including: the Cathedral, the la Malagueta bullringand the Paseo de los Curas.

Eco-friendly bicycles

Málaga has four long bicycle lanes which unite the different points of the city. If you like the freedom of being on two wheels then you can use one of the more than 600 public bikes which are spread throughout the city thanks to the Málagabici system.

Málagabici allows you to pick up the vehicle at one of the stations and leave it at the station nearest to your destination. Without a doubt, it is a highly recommended alternative, and is quick and environmentally friendly for any journey you need to make.

Furthermore, companies such as Málaga Bike Tours by Kay Farrel and QQ Bikes organise guided bike tours around Málaga.

Other alternatives

As if all that wasn't enough, there are even more alternatives! If you are visiting the centre of Málaga and want to get around quickly, you can use the services of Segway Málaga Tours or a bike taxi.

However, if you prefer a more comfortable visit including a guide, you can try the Tourist Bus, in the case of Málaga, or the Tourist Train in Vélez-Málaga.
