Hiking for the whole family in Malaga

 Tags: Leisure

The province of Malaga has become a destination for hiking enthusiasts and fans of outdoor activities thanks to its pleasant climate, its numerous coastal and inland landscapes and the leisure and cultural activities its routes offer. These routes are predominantly concentrated on the Gran Senda de Malaga (The Great Malaga Path), which is a circular route running through the entire province via paths and trails, which has become a national benchmark of adventure tourism. These routes consist of stages that are tailored to all levels, even the little ones, and for them we’ve picked these four routes to do as a family.

From Malaga to Rincón de la Victoria

This route is the first stage of the GR-249, which is the path you can take that runs along nearly the entirety of the city's coastline. It's a linear route measuring about 15.6 km altogether that’s estimated to take 3 and a half hours to complete. It consists of dirt tracks, paved lanes, footpaths and pavements, making it a very simple route. Symbolic places such as the Port, the Lighthouse and the beaches of Malagueta, the Caleta, Pedregalejo and the Palo can all be seen on this route. A few surprises are in store for you along the final stage: from extraordinary nature reserves with unique plant species to perfectly preserved medieval watchtowers as we pass by industrial facilities on the beach and hidden coves.

From Alhaurín de la Torre to Malaga

The GR-249 also covers this route - the 35th stage of the Great Malaga Path, and the stage with which it draws to a close. This stage, which is almost 13 km, is practically flat, and starts with a gentle descent. It primarily makes use of paths in good condition, though they can be a bit muddy during rainy seasons - especially in the vicinity of the Guadalhorce River. During the 2 and a half hours that the route takes, we go past the gardens of the Guadalhorce, the river and its natural area, which is where we discover several species of indigenous plants and animals.

Benaoján Station - Jimera de Líbar

Following the GR-249, we come to the 25th stage of the Great Path at the heart of the Serranía de Ronda. It's a stage that's about 10 km and 3 hours long as you take dirt tracks, reinforced and predominantly paved paths, making it accessible and highly recommended. In fact, it’s one of the most popular routes amongst hikers because you can get the train back, there are very few slopes, its length is good and because of the landscapes of the Angosturas del Guadiaro, making it perfect for families.

Villanueva de Algaidas - Cuevas Bajas

The 15th stage of the Great Path, which is also linear, is just over 10 kilometres in length (lasting about 2 and a half hours) and runs over dirt track. On the way we can see the remains of the Mozarab trail, which increase the routes appeal. The routes most iconic parts are the Cerro de la Cruz and the Cedrón Viewpoint, which offers spectacular views.
