There's no other golf destination in the whole of the Mediterranean quite like the always warm Costa del Sol. Home to the greatest concentration of golf courses in continent Europe, the Costa del Sol has earned the nickname of the Costa del Golf, and has become an outstanding international destination for this sport. Besides which, it’s home to internationally renowned players such as Miguel Ángel Jiménez.
In Málaga the importance of golf is understood and the language of golf is spoken throughout the Costa del Sol. For decades, the destination has forged a reputation as the undisputed leader in this sport, meaning everything is designed by, and for, golf lovers so that the visitor can focus on what really matters: their game.
The history of golf in Málaga
Golf has close to 100 years of history in southern Spain. It emerged in Málaga in 1925 thanks to the Real Club de Campo, today the Parador de Golf de Málaga. Since then, passion for the sport has grown continually and thanks to its unbeatable offer it has succeeded in attracting thousands of players from a wide range of countries such as the United Kingdom and Ireland, Germany, Scandinavia, Central Europe, the United States, Canada and Asia.
Behind the courses of Costa del Sol
Perhaps one of the most emblematic, and certainly one of the best known, golf courses in the area is Valderrama. This course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, has been named as the best in Europe on a number of occasions and was the first course outside of the United Kingdom to host the legendary Ryder Cup. It is, however, not the only outstanding golf course of international prestige.
Big names in golf course architecture are behind the design of the Costa del Sol's golf courses. Players such as Severiano Ballesteros and José María Cañizares and international architects such as Robert Trent Jones, Tom Simpson and Cabell Robinson have, with their talent and expertise, contributed to the destination's reputation and international fame through the creation of many memorable courses.
