Christmas is one of the best times of year to visit Malaga. The streets are full of lights and decorations for the occasion, and there are a host of activities to enjoy at this time of year. Calle Larios, the main route through the city’s historic centre, is one of the focal points of the Christmas celebrations. This iconic street becomes the main attraction because of its exceptional Christmas decoration, which each year manages to surprise locals and visitors alike.
The most highly anticipated moment: switching on the lights
The switching on of the lights in Calle Larios is one of the most highly anticipated moments for locals and visitors. This year, they’ll be switched on for the first time on 24 November at 7:30 p.m., the moment when the spectacular arc of lights overhead welcomes in Christmas. The celebration continues throughout the evening with concerts and activities in neighbouring zones such as the Plaza de la Constitución and the Plaza de las Flores.
From this day on, passers-by will be able to attend the son et lumière display that takes place twice each evening, at 6:30 p.m. and then again at 9:30 p.m. During the display, you can hear iconic Christmas songs such as “Feliz Navidad” by Boney M, “Christmas Festival” by The Boston Pops Orchestra and “Wizards in winter” by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Tribute to Malaga Cathedral
This year, the decoration of the Calle Larios pays tribute to one of the city’s most iconic monuments: Malaga Cathedral. The installation, the work of Iluminaciones Ximénez, recreates specific Christmas-related details from the interior of the Cathedral, such as windows and cupolas. Walking under the blanket of lights which covers the street from one end to the other is an experience not to be missed.
The most iconic street
Calle Larios is one of the most famous streets of the capital of the Costa del Sol. It was remodelled in 2003, and since then has been completely pedestrian. Its nineteenth-century architecture with majestic buildings and its great variety of establishments are its main characteristics. Today, it’s considered to be one of the most important shopping streets in Spain.
At this time of year, it becomes one of the focal points for evening walks and Christmas shopping. Without doubt, one of the visits which shouldn’t be missed this Christmas. Are you coming?
