Antequera Dolmens: a legacy of 6.000 years of history

 Tags: Nature

Visiting the Archaeological Dolmens of Antequera means going back 6.000 years in time. A fascinating journey to Prehistory through three archaeological monuments as exceptional as they are enigmatic. In fact, it is the first megalithic complex in continental Europe to be declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

Nestled in the heart of Andalucía, the Dolmens of Menga and Viera, next to the tholos (circular temple) of El Romeral, were built during the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. Since then, its huge stone blocks have witnessed the unfolding of history, very close to the Peña de los Enamorados and Torcal de Antequera.

What are the dolmens of Antequera like?

Menga Dolmen is a gallery tomb whose access is limited by large slabs. The corridor leads to a burial chamber formed by walls of monoliths and the whole complex is covered by a burial mound. Crossing it is an amazing experience. The Viera Dolmen is located very near and has similar characteristics, although it is smaller in size.

In your date with Prehistory you cannot miss a visit to the cave of El Romeral. Through a corridor you will come to a tholos, covered with a false dome topped by a large slab. The archaeological monument also has another small chamber that possibly served as an altar to perform offerings.

Recommendations for your visit

Four kilometers separate Menga and Viera dolmens from the tholos of the Romeral. Next to the dolmens you will find the Reception Center, where the process of the building of these monuments is disclosed. Although a guided tour through the archaeological complex can be requested, it is advisable to book in advance.

In the Observatory of El Caminante, you  also have the opportunity to see the plain of Antequera, the Peña de los Enamorados and Cerro de Marimacho. In addition, at the Solar Centre Michael Hoskin you will discover the importance of orientation of megalithic monuments before reaching the Campo de los Tumulos.

Mysterious singularity

Antequera dolmens not only represent one of the most important prehistoric Europe sets. They also have a singularity: two of the megaliths are not oriented towards the sunrise, as usual in these constructions. The Menga overlooks the Peña de los Enamorados and the Romeral dolmen locates facing the Torcal.

Some experts even believe that the Menga Dolmen could be a kind of temple for holding rituals, given its characteristics.

A trip to the past that won’t leave visitors indifferent. History and culture together in a single archaeological site: a must stop in Antequera.
