An alternative Ronda: wine tastings and cultural plans

 Tags: Leisure

Ronda is one of the most well-known towns in the province of Málaga. Its old quarter, bridges, renowned Tajo gorge, Arabic baths, gardens and bullring are well known to visitors from all over the world. However, Ronda has a lot more to offer, from the Bandit Museum to wine tastings in wineries with centuries of history, all within a spectacular setting.

Visits to wineries and wine tastings

Ronda is known for its strong wine growing culture and there are many wineries to be found in the area. They specialise in enotourism and organise guided tours of their facilities and tastings of their best wines.

On the tour, they tell you about the history of the winery, show you its facilities and how the wine is made. You can also enjoy a wine tasting session, which is always accompanied by a tapa or tastings of local products.

A city of bandits

Cultural Ronda is well known to visitors, although the town also boasts less known museums and monuments that are worthy of mention. One example is the Joaquín Peinado Museum, named after one of Spain’s most popular painters, who belonged to the Paris School.
What would become of Ronda without its stories of bandits, which that served as inspiration to writers like Merimée and his celebrated Carmen? The Bandit Museum provides a complete overview of the singular life of famed characters like El Tempranillo, one of Spain's most popular bandits.

Finally, you can end your trip to Ronda with a visit to the church of Santa María de la Encarnación, built on an Arabic mosque that still preserves a part of the mihrab.

Surroundings: the beauty of the mountains

In addition to the town, Ronda is also renowned for the surrounding countryside, made up by the mountain ranges known as Sierra de las Nieves, Serranía de Ronda, and Sierra de Grazalema. You can contemplate most of them from the picturesque square of Plaza de España, which is surrounded by the Ronda Parador de Turismo (state-run hotel in an historic building), Bullring and El Tajo. We recommend consulting the companies that organise guided tours of the various locations on foot and by bike.
