 Tags: Leisure

La Malagueta is one of the most traditional districts in Malaga. Located in the heart of the city, in this area we cannot only sunbathe but visit some monuments and museums as well… And even a graveyard! Pay attention to the plans that we propose you to discover and enjoy this amazing district.

English Cemetery

The English Cemetery is the first protestant cemetery in Spain. During 2012 it was listed as Being of Cultural Interest by the ‘Junta de Andalucía ’and it is regarded as a place full of cultural and tourist interest. To the point that it’s registered in the association of significant cemeteries of Europe, through its high artistic, historical, literary and botanical value. Some distinguished writers as the poet Jorge Guillén or the British historian Gerald Brenan, a true lover of Malaga and Andalusia, rest here.

Gibralfaro Castle

Very close to the Malagueta beach we can find one of the most historical places in Malaga:The Gibralfaro Castle. It was built in the 15thcentury in order to defend the ‘Alcazaba’, on the site of an old lighthouse which was used by Phoenician and Roman people. Furthermore, in full Reconquista it was raided by the Catholic Monarchs’ troops. In short, it is living history of this city that is worth visiting!

Muelle Uno

Do you want to go for a walk while you have the best panoramic view of Malaga and do some shopping or sit in a restaurant with sea view? The ‘Muelle Uno’ (dock one) is your place. Since it was open in 2011 it has become an essential part of the city’s culture and entertainment. In addition, we can find the only Pompidou Centre branch outside France. It is a must!

Municipal Heritage Museum (Mupam)

What could be better than discover the historic and artistic municipal heritage? The MUPAM aims to support and bring local art closer to citizens, mainly contemporary artists. It has more than 4.000 art pieces such as furniture, sculptures, pictorial works or historical documentation, in addition to some interesting temporary exhibitions through which you can learn more about the city history.

Bullring

At only a few meters from the beach we find the Malagueta Bullring, a first-class one, built in Neo-Mudejar style. It was inaugurated in 1876 and since then, it is one of the references of Spanish bullfighting. In 1976 it was listed as a Historic-Artistic Site to coincide with its 100-year anniversary of the opening, and in 1981, listed as Being of Cultural Interest.
