4 reasons why youll fall in love with Mijas

Time seems to stand still when you arrive in Mijas. This picturesque white village is the perfect place to enjoy peace and connect with nature any time of the year.

The most comprehensive holidays

On the Costa del Sol you'll find everything you could possibly want for your holidays and Mijas is the perfect example. The tranquillity of Mijas Pueblo, an enclave of white houses with the perfect location between the mountains and the sea; the wealth of marine fauna and flora at La Cala de Mijas; the watchtowers of Mijas Costa, along with its beach and its seafront promenade; the shops of Las Lagunas… And the ultimate spot that you won't want to miss: its mountains.

A unique mode of transport: the donkey taxi

With its narrow cobblestone streets and picture-perfect white houses, Mijas will amaze you from the very beginning. You’ll find quaint traditions around every corner which will beckon you to stop and enjoy the scenery, such as a ride on a "donkey taxi. If you're travelling with children they’ll really enjoy this unique mode of transport.

The mountains form the backdrop to the historic centre of Mijas, so their white silhouette can be seen long before you actually arrive. Just like in the rest of the Costa del Sol, cultural diversity will be with you every step of the way. In Mijas, Roman and Mudejar style buildings blend with modern shops and services for visitors of different nationalities. To the north there are mountainside houses, for those searching for peace and quiet and to get lost in the Sierra de Mijas.

The seafloor in Cala de Mijas

There is a unique natural area in Mijas which has been recognised at European level as contributing to the conservation of biodiversity. It is the treasure hidden on the seafloor from Calahonda to La Cala de Mijas: Neptune Grass, a 6-metre high aquatic plant which forms grasslands as it grows. These grasslands are authentic “marine jungles” and they attract countless vegetable and animal organisms searching for protection and nourishment.

Autumn and winter is the best time to see this authentic spectacle of nature with your own eyes. That is when Neptune Grass flowers and when there is less seaweed in the Mediterranean sea. This means that the water doesn’t turn green (the colour that seaweed leaves behind) and you'll be able to enjoy the stunning tones of all of the species found there. You can take your own equipment or visit one of the area's scuba diving centres.

The rich cuisine of Mijas

It’s a must to sample the local cuisine when visiting Mijas. If you fancy something traditional, then the appetizers and, particularly, the soups are for you. There is a wide variety of soups, including hot soups, such as cachorreña (made with cod and bread) and maimones soup (made with garlic and bread and served with olives), and cold soups, such as garlic soup, ajoblanco, an almond and garlic-based soup with Muscat grapes and gazpachuelo (fish soup). And let's not forget about the fried fish and espetos (sardines chargrilled on cane skewers), which are so characteristic of the Costa del Sol. For dessert, be sure to try the hornazos (bread rolls with eggs), which are a typical Easter snack, buñuelos, which are similar to doughnuts and leche frita

If you prefer something more international, just like on the rest of the Costa del Sol, in Mijas you'll find restaurants of all types such as Indian, Argentinian and Japanese, along with other culinary offers combining typical Mediterranean fish and seafood with other trends in order to adapt to the needs and tastes of visitors.
