A day out in Frigiliana: white houses and inland cuisine

 Tags: Cruises

Frigiliana is a town belonging to the region of Axarquía. The town's charm lies in combining all the beauty of the beach and the mountains. It is located in the Natural Park of the Almijara, Tejeda and Alhama Mountains, and the Mediterranean Sea can be seen from the balconies of the white houses.

Frigiliana: a typical Andalusian white village

Frigiliana is a classic “white village” (full of whitewashed houses) of Andalusia. Moreover, it is a small pueblo that can easily be visited in a day. To begin with, we recommend taking a stroll through the historic quarter, whose streets and structures of Moorish heritage have been catalogued as the purest and best preserved with respect to their origin.

You can interrupt your walk by visiting various monuments and museums that can be found along the way, for example the San Antonio Church, which is the main religious building in the town. Another suggested stopping point must be the Frigiliana Archaeological Museum, which was the first of this kind in Axarquia and contains various pieces from different periods of the history of the area, from the Neolithic period to the present day.

Festival of the 3 Cultures

If it is possible to plan your visit to Frigiliana, ideally it should be timed to coincide with the last weekend in August, when the Festival of the 3 cultures takes place. This festival is celebrated in order to unify the three cultures that cohabited here: Arab, Christian and Moorish.

Music, gastronomy and culture fill the streets with a wide variety of activities, including parades, juggling, circus performers, belly dancing, storytelling and street theatre.

Gastronomy in Frigiliana

Another of Frigiliana's great tourist attractions is its delicious cuisine, which can be found in the various restaurants. One of the most typical dishes of this region are the different potajes (stews) , made with fresh vegetables, for example cod stew, typical in Easter Week. Other traditional dishes of Frigiliana include migas (a dish based on fried breadcrumbs) and choto (kid) cooked in almond sauce.

The surrounding area

Frigiliana is located very close to the Nerja Caves, a must for visitors to the Costa del Sol. This site has been declared a Monument of Cultural Importance, and comprises one of the largest series of caverns in Andalusia.

We recommend ending the tour by visiting one the of places of greatest tourist interest in the surrounding area, the Natural Park of the Almijara, Tejeda and Alhama Mountains, which can be reached from Frigiliana by car.

A visit to Frigiliana can be considered a complete experience, as it combines the beauty of the landscape with the tranquillity of a small town, spectacular cuisine and different possibilities for active tourism thanks to its location between the sea and the mountains.
