The Cruces de Mayo on the Costa del Sol, a festivity full of colours

 Tags: Leisure

Streets adorned with flowers and squares decorated with altars announce the arrival of the Cruces de Mayo at the Costa del Sol. Despite its religious origin, this colourful festivity has turned into a tribute to spring, with its own aromas, colours and flavours. These are some places where the celebration is a real event:

The Dia de la Cruz in the Guadalhorce Valley

On the 28th of April, Coin kicks off its Fiestas de la Primavera, a fair where fun gives way to religious fervour on the 3rd of May. This is when the Dia de la Cruz and the parade of the Cristo del Perdon take place in a village adorned with crosses made with flowers. Undoubtedly, one of the most beautiful traditions of the Guadalhorce Valley.

The flowers are also the protagonists of the Festivity of the Santisimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz that is celebrated that same day in the neighbouring village of Alhaurin el Grande. Do not miss the procession of the Christ through the streets previously covered with rosemary and other aromatic plants. It is certainly a unique show.

Celebrating through the Axarquia

Frigiliana doesn’t really need any adornments, as it captivates visitors with its charms. Even so, the picturesque corners of this white village become the ideal setting to celebrate the Dia de la Cruz. Squares and alleyways full of flowers, elaborate decorative crosses and the most lively rhythms await you in early May in this village of the Axarquia.

Frigiliana also offers gastronomic tastings accompanied with local wine. Here, spring not only has the smell of flowers, but also the taste of cold meats, “migas” and cane honey. This last product, as typical as delicious, is used in the preparation of the “arropías” (a type of caramel made with honey) and the “marcochas” (popcorn with cane honey). You haven’t tasted anything like this before…

Nearby, in Nerja, the streets are also filled with floral monuments, Manila shawls (mostly made of silk with fringes at the edge) and other decorations that embellish the altars of the Cruces de Mayo. There is no shortage of music, dancing, entertainment and food. And no invitation is required!

From the Sierra de las Nieves to Malaga

One of the most characteristic prints of Casarabonela are the religious niches distributed throughout this village of the Sierra de las Nieves. The first weekend of May, the locals assemble the traditional crosses of flowers next to these niches and lots of game activities take place. It's spring, so have fun!

This custom, however, is not unique to the peoples. In May, in the capital of Costa del Sol you can see more than a hundred crosses decorating neighbourhoods, houses of the brotherhoods and headquarters of associations. The Perchel one, in the church of El Carmen, and those of El Palo, with a remarkable sailor style, are some of the most outstanding. Visit them and take part in the celebrations!
