The most unique corners on the Costa del Sol

 Tags: Nature

If you are looking for special places to live off-the-beaten-track experiences, you will love the unique corners that Malaga has to offer. These are some of the surprises that the Costa del Sol encloses, hidden between idyllic landscapes and historical sites.

From the mountains to the oases of the hinterland

In the heart of Torcal de Antequera stands a tree as majestic as exceptional. It is the Maple of Montpellier, a species of maple native to the Mediterranean region, which invites rest under its shade to those who venture into this unusual natural spot full of rock carvings carved by nature.

Even more imposing are the Castaño Santo (Holy Chestnut) of Istan, considered the oldest tree of the province of Malaga, and the Pinsapo de las Escaleretas of the Sierra de las Nieves. Visiting these botanical gems involves travelling in time through two living relics, but also enjoying trekking and adventure.

There are many options. From losing yourself in the Bosque de Quejigos of Parauta, a forest of maples native to the Mediterranean region, to bathing in the waters of the Barranco Blanco of Coin. This last spot is one of the oases of the hinterland Malaga, among with the Charco Azul of Jubrique or the Charco del Moro that welcomes the Las Buitreras Canyon, a natural monument formed by vertical natural walls with a depth of more than 328 feet.

Sea landscapes and water sports

Are you more into maritime landscapes? The Costa del Sol has very special corners facing the Mediterranean. A good example is Punta Chullera, a cape in Manilva with small cliffs and dreamy coves that will make you connect with the environment.

Following the coastline, in Marbella you will find the Dunes of Artola. Cataloged in 2001 as a Natural Monument, their fine golden sands extend to the beach of Cabopino, famous among nudists. In addition, in the area you will find the Torre de los Ladrones, a tower with a prism shape and a height that exceeds 45 feet, a reminder of the passage of Romans and Arabs in these lands.

In the Axarquia region you have the Cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo, an ideal place to practice scuba diving or kayaking. Siling its waters you will reach the Cascada Grande, whose torrent pours into the sea in a 49 feet fall.

Singularity full of history

Most of the unique corners of the Costa del Sol are the work of nature. However, human activity has also contributed to the creation of unique places. We are talking about the Castle of Gibralfaro and the Castle of Turon, the Tower of Benalauria or the Mozarabic Basilica of Bobastro, located near the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge.

Some, like the Necropolis de las Aguilillas in Campillos, have their origin in prehistory. While others, such as the Noria de la Agusadera in Cuevas Bajas or the Buddhist Stupa in Benalmádena, take us back to the 19th and 20th centuries. Do you dare to discover them?
