La Peña de los Enamorados, a love between an Arabic princess and a Christian knight

 Tags: Culture

La Peña de los Enamorados of Antequera is one of the symbols of the Málaga province natural heritage. Located 878 meters above sea level, its name comes from an impossible love story.

Legend states

The legend says that a Christian prisoner in Granada, soldier of the king Fernando, got in love with an incredible pretty princess from Archidona with Arabic origins, Tagzona, and fell head over heels for her. When the princess’ father realized that the young couple was in love, immediately ordered to arrest them and break the relationship. Feeling cornered, they climbed the mountain, located in between Antequera and Archidona, and finally they jumped into the void, convinced that it was better to die as to live separately.

Prehistoric past

Although these events are placed in the 15th century, when Antequera was the frontier between the Muslim and the Christian areas during the reconquest, centuries before, in the Prehistoric times, this limestone also fascinated its first settlers. During this period, the Menga megalithic temple was also raised, lined with the Peña, so that the first summer ray, the solstice, went into the burial chamber.

In the foothills of the mountain numerous and valuable prehistorical remains have been found, dated around the later Palaeolithic, as the Olivillos, the Cerro de la Virgen, the Partido Alto or Huerta Ciprés.

Stunning views from the top

From the peak of this natural monument, amazing panoramic views can be sighted, over the Vega as well as over Antequera and Archidona. After coming up, visitors are invited to leave a written testimonial into a little inbox.

Do you know how one of the most typical dessert of Antequera is cooked?
