Without doubt, hitting a draw can be tricky for amateurs and sometimes even for professionals. In this post, therefore, we thought we’d show you how to master the slightly right-to-left (in right-handed players) shot so that you can then come to the Costa del Golf to show off your newly-found skills.
What is a draw?
Players need to have a wide range of techniques up their sleeves to make their way successfully around the course. A draw is one such shot.
When hitting a draw, the (right-handed) player seeks a ball flight that goes slightly to the right on impact and then returns to the left when on its downward flight to reach the target. The shot can be useful for many different situations you might find yourself in around the course. If you’re in a bunker, for instance, or stuck behind a tree. A draw will help you escape unscathed from all these situations and more. So what are the steps to mastering the shot?
Three steps to successfully hit a draw
Close your stance and grip the club firmly
A good draw shot starts with the right stance. Make sure your stance is closed and your shoulders and feet are slightly to the right of your final target. You will also want to grip your club firmly with your right hand below the left with the knuckles of your left hand facing forward. You don’t want to see the knuckles of your right hand: this will favour a fade rather than a draw.
Rotate with the swing
Once you’ve set up and got the club in your hand, it’s time to think about your swing. To achieve the desired right-to-left trajectory, you need to consider the mechanics of your shot. Make sure your arms are relaxed and focus on rotating your body and forearms with the club following impact. This will help you to avoid bringing rigidity to the shot. If you were to bring your body, arms and club to an abrupt stop after the shot - instead of continuing the movement - you won’t succeed in hitting a draw.
Keep the toe of your club facing forwards
Slightly upwards and forwards is the direction the toe of your club should be facing at the moment of impact. To achieve this you will need to think about the position of the toe and about slightly crossing your right arm over the left when the club hits the ball. And remember, to hit a draw you need to combine this and all the other steps at the same time. Get rid of any rigidity to get the best effect.
