We all like to travel and see new places—and your kids do, too! There are many benefits to travelling as a family, and the province of Malaga has just the destinations to test that out. Whether you're looking for extraordinary coastal landscapes or quaint and historic towns in the interior of the province, these Costa del Sol locales promise to give you and your family the trip of a lifetime.
Nerja:
Filled with tourist attractions, Nerja is a true travel gem in Costa del Sol. (It’s one of the most beautiful towns in Malaga, too!) Home to 15 paradisiacal beaches and a beautiful Old Town with narrow streets and white houses, it’s the perfect place to immortalize with photos. While there, visit the famous Balcón de Europa and Nerja Cave. The latter is located a few kilometres from the city centre, has the longest stalactite in the world (33 metres) and offers different educational activities just for kids (like the "Science under the Earth" tour, where children can discover the cave through the eyes of a scientist.
Looking for something else? Head to Aquavelis water park, which is located a few kilometres away. Before you leave, wander down the trails of its two stunning natural parks: Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park and the Cliffs of Maro-Cerro Gordo Natural Park. The first is a popular place to hike, while the second offers incredible views of Nerja’s mountains, beaches and coves.
Torremolinos
There is never a lack of fun in Torremolinos, no matter how old you are. Here, you can go to Aqualand Water Park, which has a special kids area, water attractions for thrill seekers and a huge wave pool. If you like horses, head to El Ranchito Equestrian Club and take riding lessons or see an equestrian show! The 16,000 square-kilometre Crocodile Park is a mecca of exotic and prehistoric animals. Perfect for all ages, the destination’s extensive beaches are filled with water activities—and not too far away, beach bars for Mom and Dad.
Benalmádena
Benalmádena is a great destination for the whole family. Located just 20 kilometres from Malaga capital, Benalmádena has a lively coast and a beautiful urban centre. While there, visit Colomares Castle, stroll through the picturesque La Paloma Park, or ride the Benalmádena cable car and see Costa del Sol from above. This beautiful destination has one of the most beautiful ports in the world: Puerto Marina. Grab your family and take a boat out to see dolphins, or visit Selwo Marina park, where you can see and interact with a variety of marine animals. Nature lovers won’t want to miss Butterfly Park of Benalmádena! Go here for a family walk among 1500+ butterflies.
Antequera
Antequera stands out for its enormous scenic and monumental wealth, cultural activities and natural excursions. Be sure to take your kids and visit the city museum, where they’ll get to learn about Antequera through a slew of archaeological, historic and artistic remains. Add to their history lesson with a trip to the destination’s Alcazaba, the old Arab wall.
Kids will love the Antequera Dolmens Archaeological Complex, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the best examples of the European megalithic. This is a great place for kids to learn about prehistoric times! Outside of that, be sure to spend time in Torcal de Antequera Natural Park, one of the most important karst landscapes in Europe. It’s home to a range of diverse plants and animals, public hiking trails and, for families with young kids, there are even short hiking trails. Love animals? Head to the Lobo Park—it has 400,000+ square metres of space and is home to countless wild animals in their natural habitat.
These are four great towns to visit in Malaga with children. Have you been to any of them? Next time you plan a trip to Costa del Sol, stop by these towns (and visit Malaga capital, the heart of it all!), book accommodations that are good for kids and make wonderful memories as a family. See you in Costa del Sol!
