Internationally renowned golfer with an impressive track record, Stacy Lewis has been named captain of the US team for the upcoming edition of the Solheim Cup. The exclusive Finca Cortesín course in Casares will see Suzann Pettersen and Stacy Lewis face off in a bid to be named champion in September 2023. The world of golf is promised an incredible competition. So who is Stacy Lewis? Keep reading to discover more about the American golfer and her enviable career.
Two Grand Slams, but not without difficulty
Stacy Lewis had a troubled entrance into the world of golf. Before turning pro, she was forced to undergo surgery for scoliosis. But rather than walking away from her sporting career - as others perhaps might have - it seems that it spurred her on. And what a career she has had. As a pro playing the LPGA Tour, Lewis is known for having won two Grand Slams and played four editions of the Solheim Cup, which she will captain in 2023 for the American team. From a golf scholarship at the University of Arkansas and being named an All-American player on several occasions to having won the Kraft Nabisco in 2011 and the Women’s British Open in 2013, she is a player to be contended with.

At the top of the rankings
Lewis’ achievements saw her hold the position of world number one for over 20 weeks between 2013 and 2014. She has won an impressive 13 tournaments on the LPGA Tour. The 2023 edition of the Solheim Cup won’t be the first time she represents the United States, as she played for her country at both the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games and in previous editions of the Solheim Cup.
The Solheim Cup, the next challenge
Lewis has an interesting backstory with the Solheim Cup. She has played no fewer than four editions, two of which (2011 and 2013) were two of her best ever years, when she won the Majors. She also played the 2015 and 2017 editions and in 2019 she was assistant to the then American captain. Out the four times she has played the tournament - which has the same format as the Ryder Cup - she saw victory twice. The US team won the 2015 and 2017 editions, losing to Europe in 2011 and 2013. With such well-balanced teams, the competition is always fierce and exciting. In 2019, when she was assistant to Juli Inkster, the US did not secure victory; the 2023 edition is therefore the perfect opportunity for Lewis and the Solheim Cup to once again cross paths. And the province of Malaga might just be the place where the US team once again raises the trophy in the air.

Next destination? The Costa del Golf
The Costa del Golf is therefore Lewis’ next great challenge. The golfer has said in recent statements that Finca Cortesín in Casares looks to be a “beautiful” course but that she is yet to spend time there studying every inch of the greens and fairways, which will be crucial for the success of her players. The nearly 3,000m course with its 18 holes will make the perfect backdrop to the next Solheim Cup.
The Costa del Sol is well-known as a world-class destination for golfers and a favourite among players from around the world. The Solheim Cup, which is coming to the province from the 18 to the 23 September 2023, only serves to enhance this reputation. So why not come to the destination yourself to play its courses and learn at its academies?
