Golf in La Axarquía: A Guide to Añoreta Golf and Baviera Golf

 Tags: Golf Golf Courses

The Costa del Sol is known as the Costa del Golf, with more than 70 golf courses. In La Axarquía, this golfing tradition is represented by two outstanding names: Añoreta Golf, in Rincón de la Victoria, and Baviera Golf, in Vélez-Málaga.

If you are looking for a golf destination on the Costa del Sol that combines beaches, history and excellent cuisine, here is everything you need to know about Añoreta Golf Club and Baviera Golf Club.

Golf in La Axarquía: Two Distinctive Courses

The region is home to two of the most recognisable courses on the Costa del Golf. Both were designed by Ryder Cup player José María Cañizares and combine a technical golfing experience with views of the Mediterranean Sea and the mountain ranges surrounding the area.

Añoreta Golf

Located in Torre de Benagalbón, within the municipality of Rincón de la Victoria, Añoreta Golf was the first 18-hole golf course built in La Axarquía. Founded in 1990, it is a par-72 course measuring almost 6,000 metres. It was built on undulating terrain, with gradients that never exceed 5%, and features five lakes, two of them particularly large, which come into play on several holes.

Its multi-tiered greens allow for a wide variety of pin positions. The course demands accuracy from the tee, but its varied layout makes it suitable for players of all levels. The challenge is spread across technical holes such as the 3rd and 7th, which offer views of the Mediterranean, and more decisive holes such as the 17th, a par 3 that runs alongside one of the course’s large lakes.

Añoreta Golf Club also has a natural-grass driving range and, since 2021, has been home to the Añoreta Golf International Performance Centre, known as CIAGOLF. Its facilities also include a pro shop, golf club rental, manual and electric trolley rental, and on-site apartments providing accommodation at the golf course. Its proximity to Málaga city and the airport makes it highly convenient for both a day trip and a longer golf holiday.

Baviera Golf

Located in Caleta de Vélez, east of Torre del Mar, Baviera Golf lies at the foot of the Sierra de Almijara, within the municipality of Vélez-Málaga. Also designed by José María Cañizares, this 18-hole, par-71 course is characterised by its flat terrain, large undulating greens and wide variety of water hazards, making it a challenging yet accessible course for players of any handicap.

Baviera Golf Club has a covered driving range measuring more than 300 metres, with 21 practice bays. It is ideal for continuing to practise on particularly hot or rainy days. The club also has two putting greens and two chipping greens. The Baviera Golf Academy offers personalised lessons for both adults and junior players, with programmes tailored to every ability level.

Its facilities also include a pro shop, golf club rental, electric and manual trolleys, changing rooms and a sauna. For visitors looking for accommodation, Baviera offers its own four-star hotel and apartments, perfect for combining a round of golf with a visit to the nearby beaches of Torre del Mar or Caleta de Vélez.

Añoreta or Baviera: Reasons to Choose Each Course

Both courses share the same designer, but they offer different experiences. Añoreta Golf, with its par-72 layout and gently undulating terrain, is somewhat more technical. Its location in Rincón de la Victoria also places it close to local attractions such as the Cueva del Tesoro cave and the Roman archaeological site of Villa Antiopa, as well as the nearby city of Málaga.

Baviera Golf, with its par-71 layout and flat terrain, is more accessible to players of all levels. It is surrounded by the scenery of the Sierra de Almijara and the impressive inland villages of La Axarquía.

Both clubs host a variety of golf tournaments on the Costa del Sol throughout the year, making them regular stops for golfers travelling along the Costa del Golf.

Golf and Beaches: La Axarquía Beyond the Green

One of the greatest attractions of playing golf in La Axarquía is the opportunity to combine golf and beaches in a single trip. After a round at Añoreta Golf, the beaches of Rincón de la Victoria are only a few minutes away. After playing at Baviera Golf, Torre del Mar, Caleta de Vélez and Nerja offer plenty of beaches where visitors can relax.

Both sea-view courses are also excellent starting points for discovering other classic destinations on the Costa del Golf and seeing why the province of Málaga has established itself as one of Europe’s leading golf destinations.

Golf in La Axarquía: A Complete Experience

Añoreta Golf and Baviera Golf perfectly sum up what La Axarquía offers golfers: courses designed by the same master, settings between the sea and the mountains, excellent facilities for practising and staying overnight, and the opportunity to end each day with an afternoon at the beach.

Two more than sufficient reasons to include this region in any golf trip along the Costa del Sol.
