With more than a hundred museums dedicated to a wide range of themes and artistic trends, in recent years the Spanish province of Málaga has become a cultural centre which attracts visitors from across the world.
We propose five alternative museum routes so that you can discover the Costa del Sol's museum offer from north to south and from east to west.
1. Málaga:
Our route departs from the capital city, where the well-known Picasso Museum, Pompidou Centre, Carmen Thyssen Museum and the Museum of Russian Art are joined by other less-known museums which are extremely interesting nevertheless, such as the Automobile Museum, which has a unique collection of high quality vehicles and haute couture; the central Glass and Crystal and Wine museums; the Juan Breva Flamenco Museum and the Interactive Music Museum (MIMMA) whose motto is "Please play".
2. Axarquía – Costa del Sol
When visiting this region, a stopover in the town of Nerja is a must, where you will find the Museum of the Nerja Caves, a karst formation of incredible natural beauty, which boasts cave paintings and other archaeological remains. Continuing with our route, you will see that the best local products are the centre of many of the museums in the area, such as the museum dedicated to Honey, in Colmenar; one dedicated to the Raisin, in Almáchar and the Oil Museum, in Periana. Be sure to also visit the Museum of Antique Toys, in Alfarnate, and the Miniatures museum, in Torrox.
3. Antequera
Although this is a tour of unique museums, the Provincial Council Art Museum (MAD) in Antequera, which hosts a unique and varied collection of the artistic evolution from the 19th Century to the present day, cannot be missed in this region. As for other themes, there is the Ceramics Museum, in Casabermeja, and a museum dedicated to Andalusian Farming, in Alameda.
4. Serranía de Ronda
In the historic town of Ronda there are museums representing the region such as the museum dedicated to Bandits, the Wine museum and the Bullfighting museum. Not forgetting other interesting museums offered by the towns in this region. Genalguacil has become a 'museum town', and its streets display the work created by artists from around the world every two years at its art meetings. Atajate is also an open museum, and visitors will find designs regarding the town's wine culture in the streets. There is a museum dedicated to liquor in Jubrique, while the chestnut is the centre of attention in Pujerra.
5. Guadalhorce Valley
In this region you can visit a museum which is unique in Spain, the Bread Museum, in Alhaurín el Grande, where you will also find a centre with an evocative name, the Museum of Life, which is actually a Museum dedicated to arts and popular customs. Of a similar theme, you will find ethnographic museums in Coín and Valle de Abdalajís.
