In addition to the famous Cueva de Nerja, tranquillity and virgin beaches are the other two elements that define Nerja as a tourism destination. This coastal town is at the eastern end of the comarca of Axarquía, and offers multiple options to have a great day.
The best option is to start by bathing on the beaches of Burriana, Playazo, Calahonda and Torrecilla, which represent the most commercial group of beaches in the municipality of Málaga, which also provides us with numerous virgin coves notable for their beauty and tranquillity.
Having visited its dark sand beaches, and refreshed yourself in its crystalline waters, you can go up and visit the village and enjoy its architectural heritage whilst thinking of where and what to eat. Amongst its buildings you cannot miss the Iglesia de El Salvador in the Mudejar style which contains various murals and frescos inside. Neither can you go without seeing the Acueducto del Águila, created in the 19th century on four levels of brick-built arches to supply a sugar factory.
When its time to eat we suggest two completely different options, which will satisfy the most demanding palates. On the one hand there is the Restaurante Oliva, characterised by its creative Andalusian cuisine, which combines traditional products from the area with new products, textures and techniques. On the other, the Restaurante Cielito Lindo, which offers the best Mexican cuisine, accompanied by a great atmosphere and decorated with Mexican motifs.
Cueva de Nerja, Cathedral of Prehistory
With a full stomach, its now time to continue with our visit. A compulsory stop is the Cueva de Nerja, the top tourist attraction in the village. This karst formation is located at the base of the Sierra de Almijara, and has been defined as the Cathedral of Prehistory.
Followed by a trip around the Parque Verano Azul, which is named after the famous television series “Verano Azul” (Blue Summer), which was filmed on location entirely at Nerja in the 80s. The boat belonging to the character known as Chanquete, “La Dorada”, can be seen and photographed by tourists, as it is still anchored at the park.
To round off the day we suggest you experience the sunset from the Balcón de Europa, a vantage point that appears to float on water and which offers a spectacular panoramic of the Mediterranean Sea. What a perfect way to finish the day…
