Guadalmina Golf: discover the course that hosted the Andalucía Costa del Sol - Spanish Women’s Open

 Tags: Golf

Considered one of the best golf courses in Spain, the southern course of Real Club de Golf Guadalmina hosted the most recent Andalusía Costa del Sol - Spanish Women’s Open tournament. The decision to dispute the championship here was well thought through: Guadalmina Golf Course, comprising two 18-hole golf courses (Guadalmina North and Guadalmina South), offers the very best playing conditions.

Over the course of its history, Guadalmina Golf has hosted important tournaments including the Campeonato de España in 1965 and the European Tour Qualifying School in 1995 and 1996, the APG Campeonato de España de Profesionales in 1998 and, recently, the Andalucía Costa del Sol - Spanish Women’s Open. Today, Guadalmina Golf has over 2,000 members from 17 different countries and offers the best social life in the Costa del Sol. Keep reading to discover the most emblematic holes of this Marbella-based club.

Guadalmina North

Designed by Folco Nardi, the north course at Guadalmina Golf runs almost parallel to the southern course. When comparing the two courses at a glance, it can be said that the north course is shorter and hillier than the south and has more trees and water obstacles. Players must be careful to head straight down the fairway, otherwise they risk ending up in the water obstacles hidden in the rough and having to take shots from dense vegetation.

Guadalmina North is considered easier than Guadalmina South. A stream, El Chopo, divides the course from north to south and even crosses hole 17. If that weren’t enough, there are also lakes at holes 7, 9, 11 and 18. Overall, this is a wonderful course for players with a higher handicap who are working on building their strength.

Guadalmina South

Guadalmina South is an extremely versatile course for competitions. Its different teeing grounds enable the course to be configured to make it more challenging, putting world-class players to the test. Mid-level players can, however, also enjoy the course with an easier set-up. The movement of the greens, the location of the bunkers and the variety of distances make it one of the most complete courses in the Costa del Sol.

The course opened in 1959 and is the second oldest course in the Costa del Golf. It is the club’s first 18-hole course (the club has a total of 45 holes). Snaking between age-old trees, the fairways are narrow and protected by large trees which though grant much-desired shade in the summer, force precise play. In 2002, Guadalmina South was remodelled, practically creating a new course, with computerised watering, new tees, reconstructed greens and new lawn on the fairways.

Driving range and Pitch & Putt

In addition to two 18-hole courses, Real Club de Golf Guadalmina has a short 9-hole course, a driving range with space for 40 players (with an indoor space for 21 players), approach and chipping areas, a practice bunker and putting green. The driving range, putting green, chipping green and bunker make Guadalmina Golf one of the courses offering the most complete set of facilities in Spain.
