The summer in the interior of the Costa del Sol has a special charm. In its villages, you’ll find peace and tranquillity, but also lots of entertainment in the form of verbenas (outdoor dances) and traditional summer fairs and festivals. For accommodation and relaxation, you can opt for a hotel or rent a house in the country (with a swimming pool), where you can disconnect completely from the noise of the city and immerse yourself in the unique environment of rural Malaga. Here, we suggest several ideas for a different and very special trip.
Wine break in Cómpeta
Cómpeta is a beautiful white village and an ideal place to enjoy a few days in contact with nature. In addition, on 15 August, Cómpeta celebrates its Night of Wine, a special occasion on which to follow the locals’ lead and try one of its outstanding and delicious native products: sweet wine. For accommodation, you can opt for the Balcón de Cómpeta, a charming hotel with swimming pool, bungalows and breath-taking views.
Antequera, a journey to the heart of Andalusia
Just 40 minutes from Malaga city lies Antequera, one of the treasures of the interior of the province of Malaga. This city has a fascinating history and numerous monuments that bear witness to it. It is said that there are more churches here than in any other city in Spain, although it also has prehistoric remains such as the Dolmens and monuments from Arab times including the Alcazaba. The best time to visit this summer is during the Real Feria de Agosto (Royal August Fair), when you can enjoy concerts, bullfighting shows and, of course, lots of partying and entertainment at the Fair. This municipality has a wide range of hotels, as well as a golf course.
Discovering Ronda Goyesca
At the beginning of September, Ronda celebrates one of the most important events of its festive calendar. This is the Pedro Romero festival, a week in which the city of the Tagus fills with colour, music and dance, all accompanied by the excellent local wine. The Corrida Goyesca takes place on the Saturday, an opportunity to learn more about the city’s bullfighting tradition. If you want to visit Ronda on these dates, we recommend you book your hotel in advance so you don’t miss out on accommodation.
Guaro by candlelight
One of the most magical festivals of the summer in Malaga takes place in Guaro, a small town located in the Sierra de las Nieves. This is the Luna Mora, which bathes the streets of the town in the light from thousands of candles during two weekends of September, enveloping the attendants in a special enchantment. The rural complex La Molineta, listed as Alojamiento Singular (Unique Accommodation), has a pool-bar and a 15th-century Nasrid mill.
