Tips to improve your chipping in golf: positioning is key

 Tags: Golf

Most golfers know that the short game is the most important part of the round. After all, this is where you achieve what you set out to do: to get the ball in the hole. The chip is one of the most important shots in the short game. Want to know how to improve yours? Keep reading, golfer Anastasia Mickan is sharing her top golf tips with you so you can improve your shot.

What is chipping?

The chip shot, also known as chipping, is an approach shot in which the ball spends most of its time rolling on the green rather than in the air. Putts see the ball roll along the ground while pitches send the ball into the air. Chip shots are, therefore, somewhere between these two. When chipping, the ball wants to make most of the distance rolling along the green. As a general rule, the ball should seek to bounce at the start of the green to give it plenty of space to roll towards the hole.

In the words of German golfer Anastasia Mickan, to achieve a great chip shot, the first thing you need to do is “put your weight to your left side and position the ball to your right”. She goes on to say that “it’s always a good idea to be quite close to the ball to make sure that you hit the ball first and the ground second. It is easier to have a landing point closer to us than one that is 5m or 6m away”.

Which club should you use for chipping?

You can use any number of clubs in your bag for this shot. It all depends on the distance you are from the flag. That said, we’d recommend beginners start off using their irons.
