Atalaya Golf, an iconic course in the Costa del Sol

 Tags: Golf

If you’re looking to concentrate your golf experience in one place, why not visit the Atalaya Golf Club in Estepona? This country club, situated in a peaceful residential area and a short distance from the coast, is notable due to its two 18-hole courses that are both different yet equally challenging. It also boasts a wide range of services designed to make your experience an unforgettable one. Come and check out everything this resort has to offer in person.

Natural scenery and incredible views

Have you ever thought about playing a hole with the African continent as your backdrop? It may seem unachievable, but we can assure you it isn’t. Atalaya Golf & Country Club was designed so that its slopes and undulating terrain provide golfers with unparalleled views of Gibraltar, and beyond, to the African coast.

Of course, the local scenery is a big selling point for Atalaya Golf. Strolling down the fairways of the two courses is an experience in itself. Stepping on the green with the sunrays lightly hitting the course and feeling the Mediterranean breeze will help free your mind so you can focus on each hole. This natural setting is home to a leafy woodland and small lakes that are an ecosystem for local birds.

The Old Course, challenging golfers since 1968

The oldest of the Atalaya Golf courses, the Old Course, has been a challenge for golf players since its inception in 1968. Work of German architect Bernard von Limburger, the Old Course means players are forced to make decisions regarding which club to use for each shot, given the variety of heights of the greens

Out of the 18 holes on the course, holes 12, 13 and 14 stand out due to their proximity to the lakes on the course. Playing in the vicinity of these two lakes brings serenity and boosts the difficulty level of the game, given that there’s always the possibility that the ball will end up in the water. Without doubt, the Old Course has everything you need to enjoy playing and feel motivated at the same time.

Golf Academy

Following on from the magic of the Old Course at Atalaya Golf, we simply have to mention another of the resort’s highlights: PG Golf Academy, which is next to hole 13. Together with the driving range designed for anyone wanting to practise a bit before a game, this academy - led by Peter Gustafson - has made a name for itself in the world of golf, raising the resort to another level and inviting families to enjoy a much-deserved golfing holiday together.

Do you have young children or don’t all play at the same level? Don’t worry, because as well as offering golf camps for little ones, Atalaya Golf Club provides different playing areas depending on each player’s level and safety. For more seasoned members, the Old Course, and for new players, the practice tee.

Slopes and elevation changes at the New Course

While we’ve already mentioned the different elevations of the Old Course, the New Course is no different. This second golf course at Atalaya opened in 1990 and was carefully designed by Paul Krings. Hole 12 is a good example to show the main difficulty of the course: its slopes. However, while these challenges make the game more difficult, the various water fountains dotted around the course to ensure players stay hydrated during a round and the breathtaking views from the course guarantee a positive golf experience.

Atalaya Golf is one of the oldest and most established golf courses in the Costa del Sol. Known for its great quality facilities and care for the environment, it’s a golf resort that has adapted to the times throughout its long-standing history with refurbishments: the renovation of the Old Course’s hole 1 in 2017 a good example. If you’re looking for a place to play golf with the whole family or take a relaxing professional getaway, Atalaya Golf promises facilities steeped in tradition and all the amenities you can imagine in the Costa del Golf.
