Sustainability Scorecard in golf: what is it and why do we care about it?

 Tags: Golf

In a sport such as golf, closely linked to nature not only because it is played outdoors but also because of the environments where it is played and its philosophy of connection with oneself and the landscape, the search for sustainability is important. To promote this idea, the sustainability scorecard emerges as a new tool created by and for the practice of golf to be enjoyed in an environmentally friendly way. Something that has always been present on the Costa del Sol, also known as the Costa del Golf.

It is designed like a traditional scorecard, but in this case, the achievements that can be obtained are not related to the game score, but to environmental awareness. Thus, it includes a number of tips that promote environmental awareness. These are usually simple and easy-to-implement suggestions. Typically, there are easy tasks, such as avoiding single-use plastic or taking time to stop and admire the natural life around you, and more community-based tasks, such as taking an interest in local clubs, sharing transport or appreciating the sustainability work of the staff.

These quirky (and necessary) versions of the golf scorecard are an initiative that is spreading to more and more places. For example, at the GEO Foundation's last Sustainability Week in early October, golfers around the world were encouraged to make a personal contribution to the project by implementing the actions on a specially designed sustainability scorecard. Here are some more sustainable tips that you can apply to your next golf trip to the Costa del Sol.

Tips for playing golf sustainably

Did you know that there are biodegradable golf tees, made from materials such as bamboo, natural wood or plastic made from vegetables such as potatoes? These are an excellent alternative, as they do not generate waste that takes thousands of years to decompose. You can also try recycled golf balls or buy second-hand, and opt for clothes made from ethically produced natural and sustainable fabrics.

It's also worth stressing the importance of not using single-use plastics, such as those used to make water bottles or some supermarket bags. When you go to the golf club, we suggest you bring your own refillable bottle (there are stainless steel, glass and even plant fibre ones) and carry your stuff in reusable cloth tote bags.

On the other hand, we know that golf buggies are very comfortable, and although they are no longer petrol-powered, their batteries also pollute when disposing of them and charging them. We suggest that if you are physically fit, or if the course you play does not have many slopes, you use a hand cart and walk the course when you play. When it comes to driving to golf clubs, you can agree with your playing colleagues to carpool or consider the option of public transport.

Also, environmentally friendly local projects and sustainable initiatives will allow you to share your environmental concerns with other golfers, creating community. After all, both golf and nature are about creating community. Always pick up your litter. Admire the landscape, respect it and remember that we are part of it and that preserving it depends on our awareness and us working together.
