Malaga 2020 cultural programming: Don’t miss these upcoming events!

If you love art, culture and history, there’s plenty to do and see in the province of Malaga. With a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 784 Assets of Cultural Interest, 300 historic buildings, multiple urban complexes and plenty of archaeological sites, Costa del Sol is the perfect place to combine fun in the sun with a dose of Spanish culture.

Summer Thursdays (Russian Museum and Pompidou Centre)

Music and art go hand in hand during the “Summer Thursdays” concert series! Running through August 13, these concerts will include different performances by artists like Soleá Morente (July 9), Julia Martín (July 30), Proyecto Dasein (6 August) and Elena Garrido (August 6). All artists will perform in two renowned art spaces Malaga capital—Museo Ruso and Centre Pompidou

Every concert is FREE and will allow a limited capacity of 40 people. Attendees can pick up their tickets the day before the event. During these events, both museums will stay open late, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

 

“Toulousse Lautrec and the Circus” Exhibit (Museo Carmen Thyssen)

Museo Carmen Thyssen has a new art exhibit, “Toulousse Lautrec and the Circus,” which includes around 30 circus-themed drawings by a great Parisian bohemian portrait painter from the end of the 20th century. Attendees can expect to see pictures of tightrope walkers, trainers, riders, trapeze artists, clowns and gymnasts, all drawn with colored pencils. This exhibit will be open to the public every Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m, through September 13. Admission starts at 6 euros.

“Picasso as Seen by Otero” Exhibit (Museo Picasso Málaga)

Picasso admirers will get to find out more about the famous painter’s personal life through a photography exhibit by Picasso’s great friend, Roberto Otero! Otero is a photographer, a journalist, a writer and a documentary maker who shared several decades of friendship and art with Picasso. When Picasso was alive, Otero created a collection of photographs about Picasso's everyday life. “Picasso as Seen by Otero” is a must-see in Malaga this summer, and can be found at Museo Picasso Málaga every day, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., through September 26. Admission starts at 7 euros.

 

“Miquel Barceló, Metamorphosis” Exhibit (Museo Picasso Málaga)

Head to Museo Picasso Málaga and see "Miquel Barceló, Metamorphosis," an exhibit with 100 works, all created between 2015 and 2020, by Mallorcan artist Miquel Barceló. The collection includes paintings, works on paper, ceramics, notebooks and more. Barceló is one of the most relevant contemporary artists in Spain and beyond, and this is a great opportunity to discover his works. This exhibit will be on display through September 27.

“From Miró to Barceló: A Century of Spanish Art” Exhibit (Centre Pompidou)

Head to Centre Pompidou, in Malaga, and see one of its latest exhibits: “From Miró to Barceló: A Century of Spanish Art.” This exhibit chronicles Spanish art from the past 100 years, including works by artists like Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Luis Buñuel and more. The works represent a mix of cubism, surrealism, figuration, abstraction, painting, sculpture, film and video. This exhibit can be visited every Wednesday through Monday, from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

 

SEOANE, Retratos (Ralli Museum of Marbella)

Visit Museo Ralli de Marbella to see “SEOANE, Retratos,” an exhibit that takes viewers on a journey through the eyes of Argentine artist Seoane, who uses a combination of literature, illustration, engraving and painting to express longing and struggle. Her art is influenced by Joaquín Torres García, Leger and Picasso, and her works use vibrant colours and simple shapes and figurines. This exhibit will stay on display through May 22, 2021.
