Málaga is a film-loving province, where each year lovers of the seventh art can attend a number of different events. We are of course talking about the different film festivals which take place in the province and which have an increasing number of followers each year along with national and international prestige and fame.
The most important film festivals on the Costa del Sol
Málaga Film Festival
The most important is the Málaga Spanish Film Festival, which has been taking place in the capital for the past 19 years at the start of spring. This year it will be held between 22 April and 1 May in the Cervantes Theatre of Málaga, and at other venues such as the Albéniz Cinema, the Echegaray Theatre and at different spots in the city.
For nine days the city of Málaga is fully devoted to the world of cinema. A long red carpet runs through the centre, from calle Larios to the very entrance to the Cervantes Theatre, while bars, hotels and restaurants organise activities and menus related to the seventh art.
You can easily see film stars strolling through the streets of Málaga or having a drink on one of Málaga's terraces, television cameras filming interviews and reports around every corner and fans of all ages eagerly awaiting their favourite actor or actress at the entrance to the AC Hotel Malaga Palacio. And above all, a wide range of Spanish films and cinemagoers who are eager to soak up the best films, short films and documentaries at the festival's different sections.
Movie Score Malaga
In light of the event, the organisers of the Málaga Film Festival, the City Council and different sponsors carry out different activities throughout the year, along with cycles and small film or audiovisual production-related festivals.
For the first time this year a new event is available to film music lovers, from 29 June to 3 July; Movie Score Malaga (MOSMA). Still very little is known about this meeting between music and celluloid, although some of its stars have already been revealed, such as the late Michael Kamen, and the event also boasts its own international awards, the MOSMAs.
Fantastic Film Festivals in Málaga and Torremolinos
Fantasy films also have a place in the programme of festivals in the province of Málaga, with no more and no less than two annual events. In the capital, the Fancine Fantastic Film Festival, organised by the University of Málaga, which celebrated its 25th anniversary during its last edition in 2015 and which will be back this autumn (date to be confirmed). And in Torremolinos the Fantastic Film Festival, which has a provisional date of 27 October to 1 November for its sixth edition.
Marbella International Film Festival
The Marbella International Film Festival, now in its eleventh edition, emerged due to the growing presence of Russians in Marbella and will take place from 28 September to 2 October. Without a doubt, it's an excellent opportunity to learn about the independent film industry throughout the world, and at the same time discover this fantastic town on the Costa del Sol.
