The Holy Week reaches its peak this weekend. In addition to the large daily program of processions in Malaga city, other ceremonies take place in some of the most unique villages of the province: “El Paso de Riogordo”, “Las Cortesias de Cartajima” or “El Correr la Vega de Antequera” are some of the highlights of the Holy Week in the villages of Malaga. Besides, you can enjoy a wide range of activities, such as theatre, exhibitions and even a golf tournament. Don’t miss it!

Las Cortesias de Cartajima
Cartajima (Malaga)
16th of April
Easter Sunday is a very special day in Cartajima. The images of Baby Jesus and the Virgin are carried through the streets in different moments to be reunited afterwards in an orchard recreated in the village. Then, the images perform a little dance known as “cortesias”.

La Despedia in Alora
Alora (Malaga)
14th of April
"La Despedia" Square is the meeting point between the Señor de las Torres and the Virgen de los Dolores, after parading through the streets of Alora. This festivity has been declared National Tourist Interest and is one of the most exciting moments of Holy Week in the hinterland of the province of Malaga.

For more than 50 years, “El Paso” has been held in the village of Riogordo. An approximately three-hour play about the life and moments of the Passion of Jesus Christ performed by the villagers themselves. Don’t miss it!

Istan (Malaga)
13th and 14th of April
Istan is another of the municipalities where the staging of the life and Passion of Jesus Christ takes place. This tradition with over three centuries culminates with the moment of the crucifixion, which is symbolically performed.

Correr la Vega

Holy Week in Antequera is very special. One of the most outstanding events is the “Correr la Vega”, which takes place on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The brotherhoods with their images brisk walk to the highest part of the town to bless the Vega de Antequera.

El Paso de Benalmadena
Benalmadena (Malaga)
13th and 14th of April
“El Paso de Benalmadena” is a performance that dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century. The locals play with great fervour scenes of the Old and New Testament, but with a peculiarity: the mixture of verse and prose between scenes.

El Paso de Cajiz

This popular religious event is considered to be the oldest in Andalusia and has been declared Festival of Tourist Singularity of the province of Malaga. More than 250 actors, both amateurs and locals, perform biblical scenes of the Passion of Jesus Christ.

What a circus!

The youngest members of the family can now enjoy “¡Vaya Circo!” (“What a circus!”), a workshop-exhibition for children at the Centre Pompidou Malaga. There, they will be able to explore concepts like balance or movement through the colours or even through everyday objects.

Sacred Prelude Exhibition
Malaga (Malaga)
From the 17th of March
“Preludio Sacro” (“Sacred Prelude”) exhibits the works from who is considered to be one of the great painters of the religious painting in Andalusia: Jose Antonio Jimenez Muñoz. The exhibition is held at the Holy Week Museum of Malaga and is a great opportunity to know a bit more about the art related to this sacred time of the year.

Great Easter Tournament
Santa Clara Golf (Marbella)
15th of April at 9:00 a.m.
The Santa Clara Golf Club hosts this weekend the Great Easter Tournament, within the Marbella International Cup. A total of 72 stableford players will compete for the first trophy of the year and their access to the grand finale of this first edition.

Jesus Christ Superstar
Alameda Theatre (Malaga)
16th of April at 7:00 p.m.
Cinquecento Theatre presents at the Alameda Theatre of Malaga the adaptation of the well-known musical “Jesus Christ Superstar”. This is a charity project in favour of AMPILE, an organisation from Malaga for the investigation of Leukaemia.
