# Four plans to start the year on the Costa del Sol

The new year comes loaded with good resolutions and there is no better way to start achieving them than discovering new destinations on [the Costa del Sol](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/site/towns-and-villages/costa-del-sol-occidental). We propose **four plans** that will help you fulfill some of your promises for 2017 while you enjoy **Malaga** and its climate, rich [gastronomy](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/food-and-drink/restaurante-jose-carlos-garcia-p61881) and [monuments](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/explore/monuments-and-areas-of-tourist-interest), natural landscapes and [beaches](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/explore/the-best-beaches-on-the-costa-del-sol).

 

## **More culture and drama**

Between the 7th of January and the 12th of February, **the Festival of the Theater of Malaga** is celebrated. Eight scenic spots in [the capital of the Costa del Sol](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/towns-and-villages/malaga-p9831) will welcome nearly seventy plays, offering a unique opportunity to vibrate **with live culture**.

Actors and actresses of the stature of Hector Alterio or Concha Velasco, along with companies like the choreographer **Lindsay Kemp** or El Joglars will star in the most anticipated productions. Besides, there is also a place for **dance, musicals or micro theatre** in the festival.

## **New year, new look**

Do you need to renew your wardrobe, change the decor of your house or update your style? January is the perfect time and Malaga, the ideal place. In the first month of the year **the sales start** on the Costa del Sol so you can find real bargains.

[The shopping centres](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/things-to-do/shopping) of [Fuengirola](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/towns-and-villages/fuengirola-p9691), [Rincon de la Victoria](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/towns-and-villages/rincon-de-la-victoria-p9971) or [Antequera](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/towns-and-villages/antequera-p9301) and the **exclusive boutiques** of [Marbella](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/towns-and-villages/marbella-p9851) also join this discount campaign. Discounts that the **traditional shops** of [Velez-Malaga](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/towns-and-villages/velez-malaga-p10101), [Nerja](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/towns-and-villages/nerja-p9911) or [Mijas](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/towns-and-villages/mijas-p9861) offer as well.

## **Enjoy traditions**

At the beginning of the year [Axarquia](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/site/towns-and-villages/axarquia) hosts two unique festivities that will bring you closer to the **ancestral traditions** of this region. The first is the Feast of St. Hilario de Poitiers, patron of [Comares](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/towns-and-villages/comares-p9571), on the 14th of January. An emotional religious procession, a “**verdiales**” performance, typical folklore of the province of Malaga, and **gastronomic tastings** are the attractions of this event.

The next day, the acts in honor of San Sebastian begin in [Algarrobo](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/towns-and-villages/algarrobo-p9201), although it is the 20th of January when its Saint’s Day is celebrated. Accompanied by **wheels**, the saint is strolled through the streets of the village, where a **lively party** is organized.

## **Taking care of body and soul**

If taking care of yourself physically and emotionally is one of your firmer resolutions for 2017, [Estepona](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/towns-and-villages/estepona-p9661) is your destination. This municipality of the Costa del Sol has a dozen spas and thalassotherapy **centres to relax** or receive curative treatments.

Another option is to visit the **[Buddhist stupa](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/things-to-do/buddhist-stupa-p29281) of** [Benalmadena.](http://www.visitcostadelsol.com/towns-and-villages/benalmadena-p9401) In this Buddhist centre, with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, you will have occasion to participate in **meditation sessions** or attend lectures offered by Tibetan masters.
