In addition to its cultural, gastronomic and natural attractions, the province of Malaga has some mysterious places where it seems that time stands still and the excitement of the traveller increases. The atmosphere changes, senses sharpen and perceptions multiply at the mercy of the facts and legends that surround these places. Read about these 10 mysterious places in Malaga and choose your favourite:

1. Old San Joaquín Sugar Mill (Maro)

Located in the extreme southeast of the province, Nerja is a highly touristic town and home to the Nerja Mystery Tour. Created in 2018, it brings together some of the most interesting places in the town; Nerja's peculiar architectural trail leads us to the old sugar factory of San Joaquín, owned today by the Larios family, located in the vicinity of the Águila aqueduct built in the 19th century. The factory is a constant source of interest thanks to its unique location, the size of its installations and, more recently, its appearance on the programme Cuarto Milenio, where there was talk of alleged psychophonies heard inside. A mysterious place, isn't it?

2. Cueva de Nerja

Discovered in 1959 and with a history dating back millions of years, the Nerja Cave is another mysterious and charming enclave in Malaga. Entering its cavities is like setting off on a walk of shadows and figures whose only limit is the visitor's imagination. It has large rooms and has been the site of valuable and modern archaeological discoveries with cave paintings that predate the Neanderthals. It’s a place that had a human presence so long ago and hides many mysteries; explore the so-called natural cathedral of Costa del Sol!

3. Cortijo Jurado (Campanillas)

If you are a hopeless lover of farmhouses with history, Cortijo Jurado will captivate you. This old 19th century hacienda treasures a set of mysteries that seems to have no end. Built in an unknown year by the Heredia family and having changed hands on many occasions, the cortijo is famous for its stately architecture and its supposed underground passages, the scene of macabre events, and connects the mansion with a nearby house belonging to the Larios family (today the Guadalhorce Golf Club).

4. Barco de Chanquete (Nerja)

If you have ever seen the famous series “Verano Azul,” you may be familiar with Chanquete's boat. Named after the character that inhabited it in the production, it has become a tourist attraction with a certain halo of mystery in Nerja. A whole generation grew up with the series and the boat (which is not the original, but a replica) helped make the town the place it is today.

5. English Cemetery (Malaga)

Of the many mysterious and legendary places in Malaga city, the English Cemetery is especially striking. Not only because it has been considered an Asset of Cultural Interest since 2012, but also because it houses the bodies of those who died in the 1900 shipwreck of the frigate Gneisenau, whose names can be seen carved on a wooden plaque from the ship itself.

6. Necropolis of San Miguel (Malaga)

Speaking of a necropolis, the San Miguel Cemetery could not be left out. It is one of the most accessible mysterious places in the capital and includes ghost stories! Not in vain, it’s part of most paranormal tours that can be done in Malaga. Some say that ghosts of small children, of a bride who died in 1928 after being jilted at the altar and even of a priest have been seen among its tombs. In addition, tradition has it that a mysterious figure haunts the tomb of the writer James Bowles, who lies there.

7. Cave of the Treasure (Rincón de la Victoria)

There is no shortage of mysterious places in the city of Malaga, and neither in other towns in the province. The Cueva del Higuerón or Cueva del Tesoro attracts many visitors to the municipality of Rincón de la Victoria. The archaeological riches found there, as well as its paintings and the fact that it has been a place of passage throughout various historical periods, gave rise to the legend that a treasure was hidden inside. This sparked off all sorts of searches and led to the death of a Swiss man in the 19th century. The man, in his quest to find the hidden riches, eventually perished and it is said that his presence still lingers in the area.

8. 9 Císter Street and its Poltergeist (Malaga)

The building that used to house the Plaza y Janés offices on the first floor of number 9 Císter Street has been surrounded by an enigmatic halo since the summer of 1991. It is said that at that time, a strange and invisible force suddenly blew objects into the air and ended up destroying the furniture. Located in the old quarter of the capital, it is one of those spots you have to visit while you explore other mysterious places in the centre.

9. Cueva de Belda (Cuevas de San Marcos)

Nestled on a hill in Cuevas de San Marcos in the heart of the Sierra del Camorro, the Cueva de Belda is one of the most visited caves by speleologists in the province. Its interior housed prehistoric dolmen tools and, according to Malaga legends, a treasure guarded by a demon. Today, tradition dictates that every year, during the festival of San Marcos, the devil must be tied up in honour of the friar from the convent of Santo Domingo who expelled the demon with the strength of his cross alone. The enigmas surrounding the treasure, of course, remain open.

10. The Alcazaba of Malaga and its Ghost

The palatial fortification par excellence in the centre of Malaga is not only beautiful and interesting, but also a little spooky. According to testimonies from 1936, when the adjacent neighbourhood was being demolished, shadows, ghosts and showers of stones were seen coming from some buildings, such as the one at number 24. The event “An Alcazaba full of mysteries” by Malaga City Council sought to explore this and other enigmatic stories linked to the Moorish construction at night, the best time to unveil any mystery.
