Málaga Film Festival

Come spring every year, Málaga unfolds its red carpet. It is time for the Film Festival, whose programme of cultural activities and entertainment options ensures a fabulous experience. The magic of movies is in the air in the capital of the Costa del Sol, which swarms with actors and actresses, filmmakers, musicians and scriptwriters.

The Cervantes Theatre gets all dressed up for star-studded film premieres and galas. Moviegoers fill in the theatres, have a drink in the open air or take a walk in the shade of the Gibralfaro Castle.

The Málaga Film Festival screens feature films (many of which premiere here), short films and interesting documentaries. Film-related activities include concerts and theatre shows, as well as drawing, photo or poster exhibitions across town.

Lights, camera… distraction!

In Spring, Málaga becomes the mecca of Spanish film, holding a hundred cultural and entertainment activities. Calle Larios becomes a delightful open-air art gallery. The Film Festival’s programme features retrospectives, talks and workshops where art, literature, theatre and music can all find a place.

The film forum at the auditorium of the Picasso Museum and the performances at the Málaga Contemporary Art Centre are not to be missed. After a cultural afternoon, treat yourself to the special culinary experiences designed by local restaurateurs.

The Málaga Film Festival is also a good excuse to explore the capital of the Costa del Sol in a tour of movie sets. Plaza del Obispo and the sea promenade will bring memories of The Bridge of San Luis Rey or The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Gold Biznaga

The Festival’s highlight comes when the winners are announced. The best film gets the Gold Biznaga, while other movies in the official selection are granted other awards. The Festival’s awards are shaped like a biznaga, that is, the typical jasmine bouquet sold in Málaga in the summer.

When the Festival is over, stay for a while to soak up nightlife in Málaga. Pubs and nightclubs hold themed parties, while the saraos (parties) organised by most hotels are also worth attending.
