In the Antequera region, surrounded by olive groves, cereal fields and open landscapes, [**Fuente de Piedra**](https://www.visitcostadelsol.com/destinations/other-inland-villages/fuente-de-piedra-p9701?_ga=2.50933487.714013104.1790937722-1775451628.1790937722) is one of those inland destinations that offer a different way to discover the [**Costa del Sol**](https://www.visitcostadelsol.com/?_ga=2.144439478.2093586848.1790937723-636478118.1790937723). This municipality combines nature, heritage, gastronomy and popular traditions, making it an ideal choice for a peaceful getaway at any time of year.

Where is Fuente de Piedra? The municipality is located in the western part of the Antequera region, near the boundary between the provinces of Málaga and Seville, with easy access via the A-92. The village of Fuente de Piedra has around 3,000 inhabitants and retains the welcoming, relaxed atmosphere typical of small towns in inland Málaga.

## What to see in Fuente de Piedra: heritage, nature and traditions

If you are wondering what to see in Fuente de Piedra, the best place to start is its town centre. One of its most iconic landmarks is the historic Fuente de la Piedra, whose waters were known for centuries for their traditionally attributed properties.

This history is closely linked to Our Lady of Virtues, the patron saint of the municipality. The image is venerated in the [**Church of Our Lady of Virtues**](https://www.fuentedepiedra.es/9423/iglesia-ntra-sra-de-las-virtudes), rebuilt after the Andalusian earthquake of 1884 and notable for its historicist and Neo-Mudéjar features.

As you stroll around the village, you can also discover other places of interest, such as the Casa-Palacio del Conde del Castillo de Tajo, the Town Hall and the Silo.

An original way to explore the village is to follow the “Pa’ Flamenco Mi Pueblo” tourist route, which takes you past different flamingo figures dotted around the village while introducing you to some of the municipality’s most notable places.

### Fuente de Piedra Lagoon and Nature Reserve

But without a doubt, the feature that has made the municipality famous worldwide, and its greatest attraction, lies just a few minutes from the town centre: [**Fuente de Piedra Lagoon**](https://blog.visitacostadelsol.com/es/conoce-la-reserva-natural-laguna-fuente-de-piedra).

This area is part of an important Nature Reserve and has walking trails, viewpoints and birdwatching hides from which to admire the landscape and discover the area's rich birdlife. The José Antonio Valverde Visitor Centre is one of the main reference points for anyone seeking information before exploring the area.

**Among the many bird species that can be spotted here is the Kentish plover, although the flamingos are the main attraction.**

The lagoon is home to one of the most important breeding colonies of greater flamingos in the Iberian Peninsula. When can you see the flamingos? Their presence depends largely on rainfall and the water level in the lagoon, although spring is usually one of the best times to observe these birds.

The viewpoints in the surrounding area are also excellent places to watch the sun set over the lagoon landscape.

## Festivals and events in Fuente de Piedra

The Fuente de Piedra events calendar offers another way to discover the municipality. Throughout the year, local festivals, pilgrimages and cultural gatherings keep many local traditions alive.

### Fuente de Piedra Carnival

Carnival is one of the liveliest celebrations in the municipality. During these festivities, the streets fill with costumes, music and colour.

One of the highlights is the parade, which passes through different parts of the village and usually ends on Calle Ancha, where the costume competition takes place and the celebrations continue.

### Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Virtues

The pilgrimage in honour of Our Lady of Virtues takes place in May and is one of the traditional events on the local calendar.

The day begins with the pilgrims’ mass and continues with the procession to Parque del Monte, following a route that passes through several areas around the lagoon. It is a celebration closely associated with community spirit, popular traditions and devotion to the municipality’s patron saint.

### Santiago Fair

The Santiago Fair takes place in July and is another of Fuente de Piedra’s main celebrations.

During these days, cultural, sporting, musical and folk activities bring the village streets to life. It is a great opportunity to discover the municipality at one of its liveliest times of year.

### Antonio “El Chaqueta” Flamenco Festival

Between late August and early September, Fuente de Piedra hosts the Antonio “El Chaqueta” Flamenco Festival.

This event celebrates flamenco through singing, dancing and guitar playing, bringing artists and enthusiasts together around one of Andalusia’s most representative cultural expressions.

### September Patron Saint Festivities

The patron saint festivities in honour of Our Lady of Virtues take place from 5 to 8 September and are among the most important events of the year for local residents.

Some of the main events take place on 8 September, including mass, the procession and the traditional Horseback Ribbon Race, recognised as an Event of Tourist Interest. The parade of the manolas, one of the most distinctive features of local celebrations, is also part of the festivities.

## Nature and walking routes around Fuente de Piedra

The area around Fuente de Piedra is perfect for strolling through agricultural landscapes and enjoying the peace and quiet of inland Málaga. The paths near the Nature Reserve offer short walks, opportunities for birdwatching and wide-open views across the lagoon.

A good option is to go for a walk early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when temperatures are more pleasant and the landscape takes on a special light, particularly at sunset.

## Wine tourism in Fuente de Piedra

Wine lovers can also round off their visit with a stop at [**Bodegas Málaga Virgen**](https://www.visitcostadelsol.com/malaga-costa-del-sol/food-and-drink/wineries/bodegas-malaga-virgen-p32601?_ga=2.217336790.1922771536.1790937730-1413513643.1790937730), whose Finca Vistahermosa estate is located in Fuente de Piedra, next to the A-92 motorway.

This historic winery in Málaga, whose history dates back to 1885, produces wines under the Málaga and Sierras de Málaga designations of origin, as well as flavoured wines and brandies. The winery also organises visits to its facilities, offering an insight into the province’s winemaking tradition and a way to complete a gastronomic getaway in inland Málaga.

## Gastronomy: traditional dishes from Fuente de Piedra

A visit also offers the chance to sample some of the typical dishes of inland Málaga cuisine.

Traditional recipes include porra antequerana, gazpacho, gazpachuelo and migas. They are joined by products closely associated with the region, such as extra virgin olive oil, molletes bread rolls and wines produced in this part of Málaga.

Food is therefore another attraction that makes a day trip to Fuente de Piedra complete.

## Best time to visit Fuente de Piedra

Spring is particularly appealing for enjoying nature and watching birds at the lagoon. A visit in May may also coincide with the pilgrimage, while July and September are ideal for those wishing to experience some of the municipality’s main festivals.

Autumn, meanwhile, brings milder temperatures and a peaceful atmosphere for exploring the village, walking in the surrounding countryside and enjoying the scenery without the intense summer heat.
