Five ideas for Christmas on the Costa del Sol

 Tags: Leisure

Would you like to make this Christmas extra special? If you visit the Costa del Sol this festive season, you’ll find countless things to see and do. With music, theatre, sports, art and children’s activities, the area has one of the top leisure programmes you will find this Christmas. Want to find out more?

The nativity route

There are classic ones, open air ones and even living ones... We’re talking about nativity scenes, impressive displays which can be seen in 61 different locations across the city of Málaga this year. The nativity scene in the cathedral is well worth a visit, as is the one in La Mosca, at the foot of the mountain, or the one in the city’s town hall.

In several towns along the Costa del Sol, it’s the inhabitants themselves who play the main characters in this bible story. The living nativity scenes of Cártama, Ojén and Comares are famous, although Almayate’s is one of the best known. Combining music and theatre, the show ends with a tasting of local products.

Music

Are you a Queen fan? This Christmas, you can relive the legendary British rock band’s greatest hits at the ‘Queenie’ show in Malaga’s Cervantes Theatre on December 27. Don’t miss it!

Also in the Cervantes Theatre, the unique voices of Ainhoa Arteta and Estrella Morente will be coming together for a new concert on December 29. Both artists will be performing a traditional repertoire of Christmas songs during the show, which is called “¡Qué suenen con alegría!”

Next stop is the town of Estepona, where on January 3, the Kiev Ballet will be performing Swan Lake, one of the best-known ballets of all time, in the municipal auditorium.

These three events are not to be missed if you’re in the province this festive season.

Activities for children

The annual MIMA event for children will be taking place at Malaga’s Trade Fairs and Congress Centre (Palacio de Ferias y Congresos), from December 26 to January 4 this year. All sorts of exciting activities will be available in this huge indoor play area, including fairground rides, workshops, face painting, trampolines, storytelling and plays. A world of fun for little ones!

And on December 18 in Mijas, there will be a special performance for children aged 5 to 9 of ‘A Christmas Carol’, the wonderful story by Charles Dickens, at the Las Lagunas de Mijas Theatre.

Attractions

The Costa del Sol boasts numerous attractions where you can spend a fun-filled day. Come and visit them this Christmas! The Sea Life centre in Benalmádena, Selwo Adventure Park in Estepona, which is home to more than 2,000 species from all around the world, or Lobo Park in Antequera are just a small sample of the many great places to visit.

Sports activities

What better way to end the year than with a bit of exercise? The 6th edition of the San Silvestre Palma Palmilla Race will be held on December 31, beginning in La Rosaleda football stadium and ending in La Virreina municipal football pitch. If you would like to take part, you can sign up via the website of the Andalusian Athletics Federation (Federación Andaluza de Atletismo).
