The Costa del Sol is amongst the world's top golf destinations. Named 'Costa del Golf' as well, it has numerous golf courses and clubs, and draws in lots of players who play their favourite sport in mild weather, with more than 300 sunny days a year and moderate temperatures.
These characteristics turn Málaga Province into an area brimming with golfers who not only visit green after green but also enjoy the wide leisure, dining and relaxing options the coastal area and the hinterland have for them.
Being a top golf destination, Málaga Province stages a huge number of tournaments that attract professional and amateur players as well. Whatever your skills or level of expertise, you will certainly find in our province golf competitions you want to enter. All of the more than 70 golf courses on Costa del Golf run their own events for players of all levels, plus workshops and lessons for beginners, among other activities.
The Corporate Circuit is one of the best circuits at the national level. Open to golf federation license holders 18 years old or over with a handicap, it comprises a series of tournaments across Spain. In Málaga, the qualifying events in the Corporate Circuit will be held in the Villa Padierna Golf Club on 4 August and in the Río Real Golf on 5 August. Will you miss them?
The Senior Ladies' Grand Prix, held in El Bosque, in Valencia, in 2015 and to be staged on Costa del Sol next year, is worth mentioning too. The amateur sport similar to golf known as pitch & putt has already become popular in Southern Spain. So much so that this summer Benalmádena is hosting the Under 16 World Pitch & Putt Championship.
In addition, all the golf courses schedule their own, smaller, tournaments open to members only. If you are a frequent traveller to Costa del Golf and you want to compete, just join one of its clubs and enter competitions like the Tuna Tournament, which takes place every year on Antequera Golf. On the tournament day, the organisers offer tuna fish for lunch, hence the name of the event.
The Costa del Golf has become an international venue as well, as it has held some of the most important golf competitions worldwide: the Ryder Cup (1997) or the Volvo World Match Play Championship, which took place in Casares between 2009 and 2012. Andalusia is one of the candidates to host the 2019 edition of the Solheim Cup, occasionally referred to as the female equivalent to the Ryder Cup. Some venues in Málaga are part of the bid to host the competition. Without a doubt, the Costa del Golf has become a top golf destination. You know what they say, the sky is the limit.
