The Costa del Sol is the mecca of flamenco since last March. The Malaga Flamenco Biennial has already started and for the event to be perfect, it has the collaboration of masters of flamenco song, guitar geniuses and first figures of dance.

More than 80 concerts and recitals and a hundred cultural activities, complete the program of this festival. A series that will take its charm and power around thirty cities and towns of Malaga until the 9th of September.

Passion into Art

If you are passionate about flamenco dancing, come to the Edgar Neville Auditorium of Malaga this May. This venue, located next to the Paseo Maritimo Antonio Banderas, will host every Saturday shows by artists such as Carmen Gonzalez, Ivan Vargas or Jose Galvan, great figures of the dance.

On the 11th, 16th and 17th of June, the companies of Antonio El Pipa and Ursula Moreno arrive at the Cervantes Theatre, while on the 22nd of July the Municipal Theatre of Marbella hosts La Farruca and El Carpeta. And if you want more . . . Attend a week later the Auditorio del Porton de Alhaurin de la Torre. There you will enjoy the show “Baile Moreno” by Farruquito.

Unique Stages

The Nerja Cave will be the incomparable setting of two of the great shows of the Bienal of Malaga: the “Opera Flamenca Carmen” and the Arcangel concert. The spectacle of Salvador Tavora with music by Bizet will be performed on the 10th of June and eight days later, the performance of Arcangel, the singer from Huelva, will take place. Two gifts for the senses.

For her part, the singer from Argentina and the dancers Irene Lozano, Luisa Palicio, Antonio Canales and Javier Latorre will conquer with their art the Gibralfaro Castle in mid-July. And if you want even more, you can also go to the recital offered by Maria Jose Santiago and Chiquetete in the Cuevas Rupestres de Coin on the 28th of that same month.

Side Events

Getting to know the various flamenco styles originally from Malaga, strolling through the most typical neighborhoods of the city or travelling to the times of the music cafés. This is what the routes organised by the capital of the Costa del Sol offer on the occasion of the Flamenco Biennial. Ten itineraries that will allow you, in short, to discover the secrets of the flamenco art.

Other possibilities are visiting the photographic exhibition “Flamenco en Negro”, or going to the Flamenco Fashion Show that will be held on the 29th of June, or attending the concerts of the series “Flamenco de Altura” that the terrace of the AC Malaga Palacio Hotel will host every Wednesday of July.

An artistic getaway

The Benalmadena Auditorium, the Torrox Lighthouse or the Plaza de España of Nerja are some of the corners where you could add a very special flamenco soundtrack to your trip. Although immersing yourself in this genuine cultural expression, nothing is like passing by the Corralon de Santa Sofia in early June or delving into the atmosphere of the festival “Sabor a Malaga”, which will take the central Alcazabilla Street on the 1st of July.

Special mention should be made of the show “Mairena Sinfónico” which will put the finishing touch to the 5th MalagaFlamenco Biennial at the Teatro Cervantes. But that will take place on the 9th of September. Until then, you have much ahead to feel, discover and enjoy.
