Festivals to get real a taste of Malaga’s villages in September

 Tags: Leisure

The inland villages of Malaga offer traditional cuisine which has survived the passage of time, from generation to generation. In honour of these products and traditional dishes, food fairs and festivals are held, which offer a magnificent opportunity to discover these charming little villages, their customs and their people.

The month of September is packed with gastronomic events to suit all tastes. We highly recommend some of Malagan village fairs and festivals taking place this month. Make a note of them on your diary!

Ajoblanco Festival, Almáchar

In September there is a celebration of one of the most traditional Malagan recipes. In Almáchar, a rural district in the Axarquía region, the Ajoblanco Festival is celebrated, a day on which the town becomes an authentic open-air museum and this may be tasted alongside other typical products, such as wine and raisins. For those who are not familiar with this dish, it is one of the province’s most typical cold soups and it is prepared mainly with almonds, garlic and olive oil.

Day of the Raisin in El Borge

The raisin is one of the most emblematic products of inland Malaga. Unlike other areas, here they continue to use the natural sun drying process, which gives them a unique flavour. El Borge was the first town to produce grapes in Spain, and as it could not be any other way, every year they celebrate a festival dedicated to this delicacy. During the day there are demonstrations of the tasks that are involved in their preparation and tastings, not only of raisins, but also of gazpacho, wine and sausages typical of the area.
